I think FDB was sacked over more than just the poor start.

There were lots of rumblings at the time about fallouts with senior players.

A big part of managing a team is about how you build a relationship with your squad and get your ideas across to them and reputation alone won't do it and above all else you need your senior players to be on board.

PV seems to be much better at this and the training ground clips seem to show a much happier ship.

To be totally fair to FDB he probably didn't get the backing in terms of bringing in players to implement his new style but I don't think he managed the players he had particularly well.

Its going to take time but the basic stuff seems to be in place so as long as everyone is patient and doesn't panic after every defeat, I think we have every reason to feel positive about the future.

I agree. FdB almost certainly lost the dressing room and the willingness and belief of the team to continue doing what he was asking them to do. That combined with the poor results left Parish with no choice.
I see no such problem with the current set up. Even at this relatively early stage of our rebuild the progress on the pitch is plain to see. Exciting times.

Always thought Fdb was not given enough time. Showed a lack of commitment/conviction from SP. Pre-season and 4 games was never going to be enough for what he was attempting.
Thought the Performances showed Promise - especially the last game (can't remember which one that was!).

Saying that, a lot of talk about evolution not revolution but he seemed to go with revolution anyway.

Always felt that the board were unhappy with their decision and used the 4 losses as the perfect excuse to correct their mistake.

my thoughts as well. Although I heard that he'd lost the dressing room, so rightly or wrongly at that point you have to choose between the manager and the players. We weren't in a position to entertain the luxury of the latter.

I am ready to stand corrected but I seem to remember that not only did we lose the first 4 games without scoring a goal, we also didn't register a single shot on target for three of them - by the time we played Burnley (the 4th game) I think that the decision that he had to go was already pretty much taken.

From memory there just wasn’t a positive enough shift. We went from having a good shape and hard to score against with little attacking threat, to open and easy to score against still with little attacking threat.

So whilst there was some evolution of play, the board likely thought that there was too much that needs fixing and the risk was too high.

Also whilst he did well at Ajax, started ok at Inter, and did ok in his first season at Atlanta, his managerial career is surely going to run out of steam soon. Sacked from Inter, sacked from Palace, sacked from Atlanta, sacked from the national team. I’d be very wary if I was a chairman.

This feels very different, we are more positive are holding the ball better and are starting to create some chances. It was always going to be a tricky start. Champions league winner, promoted team flying high and form team away. 2 points from that isn’t too shabby.

The list of great players being terrible managers is enormous. Often it's average players with great mental strength and intelligence who do better.

It's insane how many managers get a good gig because of illustrious playing careers.

I'm convinced Zidane is a dud who has only succeeded because of the resources he's had at Madrid.

I seem to recall SP talking about how FdB was not on the clubs radar at all and his interest in the job came out the blue. He was added to the shortlist and really only considered as an extreme outside chance to make up the numbers a little. what did it for FdB is he had really done his research into the Palace squad and made a presentation detailing how he could evolve the then squad into a team playing to his ethos (Like Ajax). This really turned the boards heads.

I think the reality was that it soon became apparent that what you say you can do in a presentation and what actually happened was very different. I always got the impression the board and SP felt somewhat hoodwinked by FdB and so it was always destined to be a very short affair.

Liverpool were reportedly nterested in FdB sometime prior to him being appointed by us

I think that maybe he and Koeman lacked some people skills and have a slightly serious public image

Worth also considering that we lost all our first 7 games under FdB and Roy (4/3) and that we only won our first game once Zaha played his first game of the season v Chelski

Roy had a poor Euro, losing to Iceland and Palace didn’t have a plan for new manager. FdB was out of the blue. This time the club have backed Viera more fully with the change of playing style. You could say that what happened under FdB the club learned from

I think the club definitely learned some lessons and whilst I agree it seemed FDB was maybe not given enough time I am not sure it would ever have come right under him.

PV may yet fail but the start is more promising, he has been provided with some decent signings, his history will only bring him respect from his new charges and he seems like a very steady character who understands how to build a team spirit.

I would be happily surprised if we finished top 10 but would settle for retaining PL status and seeing some positive performances.

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.

It's funny, the club and especially the players who were here at the time, have spoken about what happened so many times and still the speculation continues.

I was shocked when FDB was sacked and at the time I thought, how can we sack a manager after just four games but after hearing the players talk about his time as manager, I am just glad we managed to get to where we are today.

There are very obvious comparisons that can be made between the FDB and PV appointments but just a few games in, I can see that PV'S appointment is nothing like what happened before. You only have to watch how much the players seem to be loving their time with Vieira as our manager to see that is the case.

Having said that, we are still in the honeymoon period with PV and won't really know how good or bad a signing he is until Christmas at least..

I hope he's going to be brilliant.

For the sake of the players, I hope PV is brilliant, too. If so, however, he won't remain here long.

Frank de Boer was a prick who thought he could compete with a tactic from the 70s, and then fell out with the players when it didn't work with no Plan B available.

Failed with us, failed in the states, and failed with the National Team. If only his managerial skills were as commendable as his snake oil selling skills.

It's clear from the start that he and Vieira are different.

FDB had, and still does, have a face like a slapped arse, and a really surly personality to go with it. First impressions count for everything, so it’s very easy to see why he was rubbing people up the wrong way!
This was an appointment that with the benefit of hindsight was ill judged, and was never going to work, hence the reason it was nipped in the bud so quickly.
