Think the 3 Liverpool goals originated from set pieces so think maybe we could do with something a bit like Chelsea employ

Think Tomkins inbetween our current centre backs who are both useful on the ball would give us better defence against teams with height advantage keeping in mind we have Brighton next

Wing backs are fine in a midfield 4.

I just don't think we can implement this until we're a bit safer in the table. We certainly have a couple who could go into the three. However, we wouldn't have the wing backs for the usual system. I wouldn't fancy Ward and Mitchell to bomb forwards and backwards for most of the game. Mitchell a work in progress - looks good sometimes. Ward fine, but not the best going forward.
Currently, we'd be losing an attacking player or midfielder if we did it and not gaining much from the wing backs. I think Banks plays as a wing back sometimes, but he's not great at defending, in my opinion, and probably not quite ready.
Later in the season with 38 points on the board, I can imagine seeing it.
I think we need to get the current system going a bit more first. There are definite changes in roles and patterns that we haven't quite got fully used to yet.

Wingbacks could be Mitchell and Ward / another

Could be Kouyate and maybe Ayew for Milovejic

Assuming we get to 38 points. I'm not suggesting the current system isnt producing opportunities but if you don't stick them away.....

I've not seen much of Brighton this season but they have a couple of lanky defenders who come up for set pieces which Liverpool exploited with van dyke

Playing a back 3 isn't much of a change considering how we are now playing out from the back, wing backs just have to be flexible

Just an idea anyway.

Back 3 or 4 (or any other formation) should be irrelevant for set pieces. It’s the one time you have the opportunity to get every player needed involved, they then need to do their job and mark and track players. It’s not complicated, just takes organisation, concentration and discipline.

I do like that it gives us the ability to play two up top but still own the midfield. For example:

Ward Andersen Tomkins Guehi Mitchell

Luka McArthur
Gallagher

Benteke Wilf/Olise

Eagles should have wing backs.

None of the goals had anything to do with height, it was not competing for loose ball in the box. Reidewald was culpable for 2 of the goals, not picking up Salah and being in no mans land for the 3rd.
Vieira has set out the formation, I doubt if he is going to change anytime soon.

5 3 2 never works unless you have the right players for each position, like when Chelsea won the title they had alonso and moses who were both better going forward, ward and Mitchell are both terrible, they also had Luiz as a sweeper and azpilicueta who could just go right back and turn into a back 4, we don't have any of these players.

Playing 5-3-2 doesn't really achieve much more for us in defending corners. Kouyate would be most likely to slot in to the 3xCB part and he's on the field anyway as a DM.

We did seem to be playing 5-3-2 against Chelsea in parts of the second half though.

Mainly, we just need to work on defending set pieces!

Whilst I like the formation for the right team, I don't think they are the right players for the job. As they effectively need to provide all the width.

If we still had PVA you might be able to convince me
