I think that, defensively, they are good players, too.

However, the point I'm making is that I'm not so confident in their abilities with the ball at their feet, doing what the current centre backs are asked to do by PV.

Are you?

Probably never had to worry about it before but reckon they can adapt like Wardy has

This. Both Kouyate and Tomkins are quality CB's capable of making the starting 11 for most of the bottom half of the PL. From what I've seen over the years, both are comfortable in possession and good defenders.

We're blessed to have such strength in depth.

Kelly seems to be completely out of the picture, but always put in a solid shift before he found himself in the wilderness.

I really hope so.

Am I fretting too much?

There were times last season when Palace were down to the bone with regards centre-backs. there were some amazingly adept performances from those called up. Kelly was the most surprising while Dann or Tompkins interchanged with Cahill quite proficiently.
The style of playing out is now constant, not the inexact art under Roy, but nevertheless if Kelly and co. have to do it again they will with Kouyate now very able.
What the midfield have to do is get back and make it happen, and that is very likely.

I thought I'd bump this up since it does seem to be a genuine concern.

An Andersen-less defence has proved that this is, indeed, an issue and we certainly do need cover with a like-for-like CB. It's clear that Tomkins is not well suited to our new style of play.

It's not enough to be a stopper.

Yep, this is a good point, but PV gave him some praise yesterday. He had an ok second half. The out ball from Anderson has been so important from us and it frees up Guehi because teams know they have to close him down when the two of them play together.

I'm interested to see how Clyne will get on in the next game now Ward is suspended. Could also be a chance for Hughes if it comes to shifting Kouyate back into defence at some point this season. Good to see him come on at last, and he, Gallagher and Schlupp can make tackles. They aren't lightweights.

I'd be most worried about Mitchell getting injured. He's been brilliant and we only have Schlupp as cover.

I ain't got nuthin' funny to say. Sorry.

Neither Kouyate nor Tomkins have looked comfortable in the few matches (including pre-season) in the PV system. As for Kelly, who knows? He doesn't seem to have been good enough to play for the first team for a long time now. The one possibility (if he ever gets fit enough to play again) is Ferguson - but then we haven't seen if he can even play at PL level.

It is a worry.

OBrien, Rich-Baggypants, Ward, plenty of options

Are you referring to CB's?

I don't think I've ever seen Ward play in that position (or have I forgotten. Hardly at all if he has done). Anyway, certainly not a CB.

With respect, the other two can hardly be called 'options' when they haven't played in the Premier League, can they?

I actually think Tomkins is possibly a better defender than Andersen and less likely to be muscled off the ball; however, this season we really do need two ball-playing centre-backs for the system to work well. Technically Jairo was brought in as a ball-playing centre-back, but he has never convinced me defensively. It'll also be interesting to see how Clyne gets on if he comes in for Ward (who I believe now has a one match ban). Last season he looked a bit lost positionally at times, but he is possibly faster and better when going forward than Ward. Kelly hasn't even looked convincing in the U23 games he's played, so I really can't see him playing again unless we get down to the bare bones.

A defender who turns his back when the ball is kicked at him.

It's my opinion that anyone who does this shouldn't be in a Palace shirt. I remember one Danny Gabbidon doing so and then never playing for us again Was I glad to see his back on that occasion.

Patrick Viera's post -match comments:

"I think we weren't brave enough to play out the back. We were missing players today, there was a lack of confidence in possession. We didn't allow ourselves to play."

In a nutshell. Top priority for Jan: buy another CB who is comfortable carrying. I'm sure Dougie must be able to recommend one that he's seen on his scouting missions.
