The Selhurst crowd, like that of probably all London clubs, are part of the white flight exodus but I suspect they feel more affiliation to the local area than the current population. It’s just a culture thing. I don’t see why it’s ok to have a pop at loyal supporters for being this “male, pale and stale”.

Whilst I'd agree that, obviously, the supporters are predominately male, Palace has also always seemed to have had far,far more females (and children) in the crowd than most other football teams, especially since the 90's when the violence was being stamped out of the game.

All I can do is comment on NFL football games' I have not been to one in 25 years. There are a number of reasons for this. Single game tickets are impossible to get. If you want to buy a season ticket you have to buy a what is euphemistically called a "seat" ticket. This gets you on the list to buy a season ticket. The main reason I stopped going was the number of drunks seated near you. Tailgating starts around 4 hours before the game in the parking lots provided by the management. It had got so bad that the teams provide family sections. No beer sold.

We did the Selhurst stadium tour a few years ago with the kids and were lucky enough to be guided by one of the Crystal Palace historians who's knowledge of the club was immense. One thing that stuck in my mind was we were told that Palace historically were one of the teams that had the highest number of female attendances at their home games and this high female attendance stretches back many, many years.

I’m black, male and defo not stale and always been quite proud of the amount of female supporters and children who attend Selhurst. I’ve never sat in the Whitehorse always been Main Stand since 1990 and recently since 2016 been in the Arthur near the away fans as the eldest daughter now 18 wanted to sit near them for the banter. Over the years I’ve noticed more female fans attending games in pairs and groups.

I think what the OP is getting at (without actually saying it for some reason) is why are there so few black and Asian people at football, especially at clubs like Palace where the local population is probably more than 50% of colour. Perhaps they don't have the disposable income, lack interest, don't have an affinity with the local team, are glory supporters, think they might get racial abuse -who knows ? I'd be interested to find out why. Sort of related - I was walking over Tennison Road bridge to a game a couple of seasons ago, when I heard a young black girl (about 8 or 9 years old) say loudly to her mum "where have all these white people come from" ? This affirms what's been said already, that the the bulk of our support probably (like me) are people who were born and bred in the area but have moved away to the home counties.

Over the years I’ve noticed more female fans attending games in pairs and groups. I bumped into a female co-worker (many years ago) at a game which surprised me as she didn't seem the football type. However she was a single parent mother of 2 Palace mad boys so she was doing her her duty. Ironically because she was forced to go she became a Palace fan even after her now teenage boys lost interest.

I would think a couple of reasons for less (lets say U16's) going are grounds having to change to all seater and the change from paying on the day to season tickets. Some children going in the terraces would go to the front of the terrace with any adults they went with standing within the crowd.

All seater stadiums have made it impossible for kids to go to a football match and meat up with their mates. Not just the price of tickets but the scarcity of cheaper tickets too. No idea where the next generation of football fans is going to come from once we have died out.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |
