Some of our best early season performances came with him in the side.

At present we have a CF who is playing well (more than enough to keep his place), and 2 wide forwards who are amongst the best in the league. And before last night he'd played 1 min in the last 5 games

OE has good feet, a decent scoring pedigree, and is versatile enough to play across the front.

He might press a little less than Wilf, but lets remember that Wilf is one of the best in the league at that.

I don't know why so called fans are so quick to completely write players off. We need a squad, and he has made good contributions over the season

I'm sure he'll get his opportunity in time. PV has clearly said that he sees his best position as a no. 9 but his versatility enables PV to play him out wide. Let's not forget that Edouard and Mateta gave LiVARpool a lot of problems in the January home game.

I'm happy that we have him. At present, though, Mateta is doing enough to keep his place.

Perfectly put.

He was poor defensively yesterday, but he's clearly not used to the role - I can't imagine he spent much time at Celtic playing in games like yesterday where you barely have the ball and you're pinned back to that extent, so no doubt it's a learning curve.

Even though he has played off the left previously, doing that in a team who dominate the ball and the chances (ie. Celtic) is very different to doing it against a team who dominate the ball and the chances.

As you say, the idea that Edouard is not a benefit to the squad is just childish - he's just turned 24, first season at this level and averaging a goal every 2.5 games despite being in and out of the team... subsidised wages FFS.

Agree with you. It's funny how we as fans view things. I actually thought he came on and played well on the handful of occasions he actually had the ball.

Let's remember we had our backs to the wall when he came on but when he did have opportunity with the ball he did the right things. His chance was always going to be difficult as he had two players on him.

Yes I'll agree I can remember 2 occasions where I felt he could of been a bit sharper in reacting but on the whole I think Edouard is technically quite gifted with quick feet in possession and good vision.

He had played 1 minute in the previous 450 minutes and we were playing Man City so he was hardly going to change the game when he came on.

Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!!

I completely agree with you; I too though he did ok on the occasions he had the ball and he certainly looks technically gifted.
That said, I have been surprised how little he has played and its made me wonder if there is an attitude issue? Something similar happened when he was at Celtic if I recall.

Thought he was dire again yesterday. Looks clueless with the ball and without it. A rare cock up by the scouting team on this one.

I think a swap deal with someone will benefit both him and the club, before his value keeps decreasing.

When he was brought into the club, we lacked creativity in all areas of the pitch. - heavily relying on Zaha for everything. We now have an abundance of talent to supply a proven goal scorer - which sadly he is not. To his credit, he has incredible close control of the ball - but other areas of his game still need work.

I watched his body language yesterday - lacks confidence. You then look at JP, it’s like the guy is reborn! He lives to celebrate goals, but wants the whole team involved - as he recognises that his goal can from great build up play.

Just my observations

There's a big striker at D.C. United who might fit the bill.

Odsonne Edouard won the 'Tartan Boot' in Scotland in the 2 seasons before he joined us with 22 and 18 goals, however he was playing for a top team in the Scottish Premiership and perhaps their system of play was more suited to his strengths.

Strange, isn't it? I thought Edouard played well yesterday and did exactly what was asked of him. He worried defenders and created space for others to exploit. He is a bit like Ayew, in that some supporters see his lack of goals as a reason to drop him. Playing him until the game starts to open up, and then swapping him for Mateta, makes sense and has already worked several times. I think Vieira knows what he's doing.

I totally agree that there is a lot more to football than goalscoring. Nevertheless after all the other 'work' is done, a striker should be relied upon to tuck chances away when they arise; something which both Édouard and Ayew failed to do yesterday.

I only saw the MotD hihlights but didn't Edouard flick the ball on to Zaha for the first goal, and then do brilliantly to create the "goal" for Schlupp (disallowed because his leaning arm was in front of the defender's foot, but not the defender's leaning arm)?
