Its fine margins and with a bit of luck we could but Im not sure we are ready to compete on so many fronts . Win the games against Brighton and Arsenal as we should have done and we lay 5th in the premier league 3 points off 4th (Wet Spam )

Its a step we should be taking in the near future but teams that are not ready for it end up like Bolton , Middlesbrough and Wigan

And we still need a striker

It’s strange how people see things, at the same stage last season we had one more point, but it was all doom and gloom “we’re gonna get relegated”, now it’s “will we make Europe”.

It's about who we've played and how we played. As I've said earlier on another thread, we got just 8 points from the corresponding 11 fixtures last year (ignoring Brentford) as against 15 this. On the goals front it was 5 for and 17 against in those fixtures last year as against 18-17 this. A significant improvement on both fronts which bodes well for the rest of the season.

Furthermore the first 12 fixtures of last year to which you refer included the opening two wins against teams which were clearly underprepared and wins against two promoted teams who subsequently went down. Overall a significantly easier run of games than we've faced this year.

Having said all that, I'm not on the 'we can make Europe' bandwagon but I do think we could finish in the top 10 for only the second time in the PL.

As well as Doombear's quantitative analysis, from a qualitative perspective this season we definitely deserved to lose the two we lost, but around 3/4s of the draws (apart maybe from Brentford and Burnley) we absolutely deserved to and should have won.

Compare that with last season when I remember a pretty sizeable proportion of the wins and draws we came away with, I wondered quite how we'd managed it.
