Average salary doesn’t seem to bad but can someone explain what the Bands are please. Presumably some experienced nurses are on good money?

"We are in this together" is almost insulting - our Government could not have made it any clearer that we are not.

Someone doing life-saving work for 60+ hours a week and then relying on a foodbank to feed themselves should be "content and get on with it". Tory Britain.

I would agree with many criticisms of banking, how it operates and the sheer amount of political real world power it has...has always had.

However, the test is in the eating. If those tax reductions results in more considerably more inflows than their cost then it's good policy.

I would certainly agree with you that the cost of living situation where someone's wages aren't enough to live is an indictment of economic mismanagement.....it's generational mismanagement and has emerged via governments of all stripes.

Some nurses are very well paid but they tend to be the experienced specialist nurses. Most staff nurses are on band 5 with chargehands and sisters a band higher

Most nurses who have a few years under their belts are reasonably well paid although housing costs are higher in London and big cities than elsewhere.

The other major expense for many is childcare especially for single mothers with absentee fathers who don't contribute to the upkeep of their children.

Nothing personal, but I really take these "my friend who does X" type of stories with a massive pinch of salt - I don't think there's anything to be learned from those type of individual cases.

14% of nurses have turned to foodbanks in recent months
1 in 3 are struggling to afford food and heating.

Nothing personal you say then call me a liar.

If you'd rather believe quotes from media with vested interests then that's your prerogative

Don't be so precious for goodness sake - people have biases and agendas, stories get retold around the houses and suddenly change shape - I'm not calling you a liar, I'm just saying I don't care for that type of 'data'.

It's not about believing quotes elsewhere, it's about scale - what one person experiences in one specific case is largely pointless looking at.

Thanks. Is it automatic that after x years you move up the band grade? Or is it performance related?

Whilst I have no sympathy for fat cat bankers it’s not a valid comparison. Their job can move continents if needed so the reason was to ensure they stayed here and paid something rather than flew and paid nothing.

We are all in this together. Even those who think they are insulated. I certainly believe we must increase taxes on those who are above average in their incomes and living standards. If you have read my posts I include myself on the hit list.

I am no supporter of the way the Tories have behaved since they caved into Farage and agreed to hold the suicidal referendum. However much of what is affecting us now isn’t their responsibility. It would have happened whoever was in power.

Nurses are in high demand abroad. They too can quite easily move continents.

Some do, of course. Mainly the international nurses who see the UK as a stepping stone to the USA. Most British trained nurses have families and other roots here.

My wife and I have talked of relocating to California where she has family and an open door. She already has the book to study to know what exam she would have to pass.

It’s unlikely we will do it though. Too many strings holding us here.

My wife was taken ill when we were in Australia and ended up in hospital where many of the doctors and nurses were Brits
