Nothing is really going wrong. We have a new manager with a new and more progressive style of play with most of the players not naturals for that style. We will need a couple of more windows to remove those who can't adapt and bring in those with the necessary skills,

In the meantime, the main thing is to stay in this league so the longer term plan can come to fruition.

That's a very rational viewpoint and I think you're right. Frustrations also aside, Roy had to retire at some point and hence we needed a new manager. It's not like we just got rid of Roy in the search of glory. Viera has done a good job overall when he came in and we were also unlucky with a lot of points missed prior to this losing run.

Someone else in this thread was talking about how even the teams slightly above us have spent millions to limited effect. Man U, Everton, Arsenal, etc. We don't have anywhere near the budget of the big clubs and hence our only real possibility is to bring on talent that we can develop (Eze, Olise etc) and hope that they can become big stars one day.

Frustrating time period though and a win would help a lot to change the mood..

Except at that point, others will doubtless be injured. Or suspended. As you said (and as I said in an earlier post) - no depth.

Lets just hope that they are in position where we have a little bit of decent cover e.g. the front 3. With Zaha, Benteke, Ayew, Edouard, Olise, Eze, (Rak Saki) we could take an injury or 2 without huge repercussions.

I must admit that I would have had Macca in the indispensable list, but after recent weeks Anderson, Gallagher, Guehi, Macca are central to the way we want to play.

How so ? I'd love to hear an example if you can think of one.

A lot of money was spent in the summer and it had to be.

We had an aging squad with little / no sell on value. We hadn't invested in new, younger players - with the exception of Eze - for some years.

You seem to think that spending money instantly translates into success. You don't seem to appreciate that Guehi, Olise and Edouard have never played at this level before. That we are implementing a new style under a new manager.

A few weeks ago you were spouting about finishing fourth. But a few defeats later and now some of the players that only 10 days ago were part of a team beaten only twice this season ( by Chelsea and Liverpool ) are deemed by you as '' ineffective ''.

Get a grip.

Its just an opinion and a feeling something is not right, only time will tell

We have gained 12 points against the top 10 current in the league; have played 5 of the top 6 away.

Injuries / form effect every team throughout the season. We are in a good place overall but maybe slightly weaker at the moment.

4 points from the next two games would be a good return, 3 reasonable

Those who say they are not worried about relegation need to take a long hard look at the current PL table where we stand just 6 points from a relegation place and this would reduce to three points if Burnley win their game in hand. so even a mid table finish this season seems a long way off. The team this year is of course vastly different to the team last season and we also have a new manager. All this makes us as vulnerable as any other team coming up from the lower league, this season is going to be difficult and the risk that we may be relegated is considerable. Whilst to some extent losing key players to injury contributes to the downturn in form it is more likely to be that other teams now have more information on the way we are going to play and they have now come with a plan to counteract that and as a consequence the early season promise now seems a long way off. We are also having difficulty defending set pieces and making mistakes at the back which are proving to be very costly. We continue to have problems up front with the inability of our so called strikers to score goals. It remains to be seen how PV can counteract these problems and what improvements can be made to the team during the next transfer window. IMHO this will be a very worrying time right up until the end of the season and I just hope that PV can keep us up!

1 yes missing Macca and Anderson
2 Over dependent on a tiring Gallagher
3 Viera still learning eg why hasn't Hughes come on for Gallagher or replacing Kouyate ?
4 Wilf prefers to win the 'most fouled player' award than beat defenders
5 not enough crosses to Benteke AGAIN !
6 Clyne not as good as Ward getting forward .
7 Viera's refusal to put a man on the back post when defending corners.
8 still waiting on Eze to hit full fitness
9 our free kicks are too predictable and our corners rarely find our players.
10 we were all starting to get carried away with some good results mixed with some points thrown away giving us the idea we were really a top 8 team when really we are a team in transition.

I agree completely, a lot of money has been spent by Palaces standard, and yet the same ineffective players seem to be rolled out, Zaha, Benteke, Ayew hasn't worked, yet we still roll them out, and no sign of any young players on the bench for a run out, it appears sometimes that PV has lost his enthusiasm.

To be clear I like Viera and have enjoyed the season thus far. I also think he's been let down by our finishing at match winning moments with Benteke (yet gain) and Ayew being most culpable.

But I've got nagging doubts about the fortitude of the team given the nature of the goals we've conceded and his tactics and use of players. I've not listened too closely to his interview after the game on Sunday but understand he was frustrated by our inability to be brave and play out from the back whilst selecting Schlupp and Kouyate and having to use a right back and centre back who hadn't played much over the last few months. That said there's still an argument we should have won.

Any manager is only six or seven games from their job being under pressure and ultimately the owners biggest concern will be to protect their investment. He needs a result in the next three IMO.

Before the Villa match we hadn't lost since Liverpool on September 18th (granted there were three weekends taken out for Internationals). Now it looks a bit different. One point from the last twelve possible. Everton will be tough. People like Richarlison, Gomez and Gray can really hurt you. Did you see that Gray goal against Arsenal? Not bad for a £1.5 million signing! Have we got any players who can strike the ball like that? Townsend could, and he'll be playing against us on Sunday.
I would argue that we don't have players of that quality. We haven't bought quality since Cabaye. Benteke had it when he arrived, maybe, but when he comes to write his autobiography, I don't think the chapter on the Roy Hodgson years will be glowing.
We buy players with potential, perhaps even great potential: Eze, Olise, Andersen, Guehi. Or we buy journeymen, Ayew an example.
There are great hopes for some Academy products, but the likes of Ray Sakyi are probably further from getting a start now than they were five games ago. They are not going to be bloodied when we are dropping down the table.

We had the opportunity to sign Gray, but turned it down.

I think it’s become clear how much we miss Jimmy Mac, he was playing really well, the engine room of the team. Luka does his usual of just sitting there and giving the ball away which obviously breaks up our own attacks and causes us problems at the back

This is the main point really. I think we all got a bit excited, and fair enough. We were playing some great football and arguably deserved an extra 8 points than what we have. That's football though and it doesn't always go your way. I think however, the games against Leeds and Villa have given us a bit of a reality check.

I actually said to a mate that the Villa and Leeds games will be a good judge of where we’re at, because both totally outclassed us last season on their own patches, like everyone else I fancied us to win both, but it just shows, we’re not as good as we started to think we are
