London’s 4th best team?

I wrote in a previous thread about the Club’s strategy and how important it was for us to establish ourselves as the best Club in South London and I think there is little doubt that we have achieved that goal now. Whilst being ‘South London and Proud’ should remain our mantra, I think we can start to think about establishing ourselves as one of London’s top Premier League sides. However, the big battle as I see it, is for us to establish ourselves as London’s 4th best side and in the main that means continuing to grow and trying to surpass West Ham in terms of the strength of our playing squad and the results achieved on the pitch. West Ham are having a good season but in our two game against them this season we could’ve quite easily got all six points, as we generally outplayed them but unfortunately we weren’t as clinical as we should've been. On paper I think our squad is stronger than theirs and it is probably now the strongest it has ever been and with our new Academy and the promising performances of our U23s and U18s the future looks very bright. What do others think about our chances of establishing ourselves as London’s 4th best side?

As much as it pains me, West Ham have a much better squad than ours. One that has been heavily invested in, over the last couple of years. Consistently buying 2 or 3 good (and expensive players a window).

Have to agree with MrRobbo on this one. WH squad is better and it shows in their results and performances since Moyes went back. Also they have a massive ground compared with us and are getting the crowds and with that no doubt the income as well. As far as recruitment goes, they've done well over the last couple of years, especially in buying Coufal and Soucek at what now seem bargain prices and Bowen and Benrahma look to be good investments as well. We have a way to go before we can even think about overtaking them.

Wasn't so long ago we were knocking wet spam out of the playoffs. They are nothing special and I have never liked their owners or fans. They have had help with the taxpayers stadium and have done well with Moyes of late. So lucky to win at Selhurst.

West Ham could well be victims of their own success. No doubt there will be suitors for Rice in the summer, and if Chelsea or City come calling it will be hard for him to resist. Rumours persist about Liverpool's interest in Bowen. He is all about the money. THat's two vital players potentially gone from their team. Yes, they will get massive fees, but it's all about the right players coming in. Spending money doesn't guarantee success, as they found out with Haller at £45m and I'm not convinced about Vlasic they spent £30m on.

Regardless of history we will not compete with other clubs that have higher ground capacity or Chairman who see spending their millions on the team as a game rather than our 'investors' . Nothing wrong with either but the question posed .Can we be bigger than West Ham is no we cant . They have a 60,000 seater stadium that all London taxpayers paid for . They rent it for the season for a paltry £2.5M per annum . The basic economics means we are always going to behind them in size . Thats not to say we can not aspire the beat them nor anyone else but over a period of time the best we can do is South London's number one . I'll settle for that .

West Ham are a bigger club, but they have only been more successful in recent years thanks to Moyes and strong investment. If Vieira sticks around and gets the opportunity to sign the players he wants then I could see us pushing them within a couple of years. Personally I hope we also overtake Spurs. Never has a club with so few trophies in the last 30 years had fans with such an inflated sense of worth. Arsenal and Chelsea fans are annoying but at least they have the trophies to back it up.
