It don't like to say it but it is worth comparing our academy to Brighton, they have 4 or 5 players out on loan to championship clubs and some across european leagues, it brings in money in loan fees and gives them experience at a high level. It does make me laugh from time to time that they tell me Percy or Tau Billy Arce are ripping up the Belgian league and will be £50m forward as they slowly descends from sight but they are probably ahead of us at the U23 level. They have had their cat 1 academy for 10 years now while we have had it for one season.
Might just be an odd coincedence but what is interesting is with exception of Ben White most of the players who have made to the first team from their academy haven't really gone out on loan much Sanchez, Connolly and Alcate of the premier league home grown. ALthough Connolly is now out on loan but really hasn't done much since breaking into the team.

You're right, but the explanation is also in your email - they were able to invest more money into it much earlier than we could, and so are further along in setting it up.

Brighton also do a hell of a lot of youth team recruitment, which we've only really just started to do; we've signed kids from Scotland, Ireland and other English sides in recent months, none of which we were doing before. Brighton seems to have scouts all over the place.

I think one of the biggest mistakes was when Coppell didn't take Andy Cole as part of the Ian Wright deal when it was offered, then signed for Bristol city for 250,000 2 months later.

Recent years the young players who have left seem to have disappeared quite quickly.

In previous years Collymore is definitely the biggest error - £150k to Southend and then £2.5m to Forest 6 months later.

Surely Gareth Southgate must also be up there - played over 50 times for England.

But there are others.

Leon Mckenzie was with us for years and did well on loan to Peterboro and sold for peanuts. Had a good spell in the prem with Norwich and i think moved to Coventry for c£1m.

Chris Powell - left back who ended up playing for England

Simon Osborn - lost his way a little at Palace. Went to Reading for £90k - a year later moved for £1m and played in the prem for Wolves.

A number of strikers have left and done well e.g. Marcus Bent (£3m to Ipswich) and Steve Claridge etc. Maybe George Ndah, David Whyte, Jamie Moralee and Steve Kabba (until injuries) did well and even Akinbadbuy went for £2m after we gave him a free.

To a lesser extent Vincent and Cox both sold to Bournemouth for small fees, both enjoyed good careers and big moves afterwards

I always thought he would be a top player

Did we get a fee or future fee? Despite everything said about ours not being good enough, there are plenty of our ex youngsters knocking about the league. Some doing well. It isn't long before one of them makes it bigger. Around 25-26, is when you'd perhaps expect it normally. I wonder whether Jay-Rich got fed up and asked to leave? I expect he will at least make a Championship side in the end.

I'd be amazed if we don't have sell-on clauses etc. in there - when you sell a kid like that you tend to insure yourself in case he does turn into a late bloomer..

Hiram Boateng and Sullay Kai Kai both seem to be making decent careers for themselves and wouldn't be surprised if they make it into the Championship at some point. Ladapo has proven a good goalscorer in the football league.

JRB is a year OLDER than Marc Guehi and only a month younger than Tyrick.

We probably have a sell on clause but let's not pretend this guy was on the verge of PL football. If he was he'd have played long before now.

Arguably JRB's role was to get him in, get the U23s to a good standard ready for the promising U18 group to walk into really competitive football as they've been doing this year, and in return he gets a club which he was miles away from at Welling before we picked him up.

We'd have had to ship him at some point. It looks like a good move all round to have likely done so with a clause rather than it being on a free.

Exactly this - someone who has not played a professional game by 22 is not going to break straight into the first team in the Prem.

As you said he wasnt close, and likely wont ever be ready for PL football.

Its where the U23's is really tricky. Beating the Chelsea team feels like it should be really positive. Showing that we are have some youngsters that are up there with the best in the country.

In reality it doesn't really show anything. Their phenomenal U23 players are in their first team already (and the England senior). And their brilliant U23 players are out on loan in the prem. Then they had a raft of U23 players that have been sold straight into PL clubs (Guehi, Livramento etc)

Granted they are up there with the best. But I cant imagine there are many other future prem players still playing U23 football at 22.

I agree to an extent , but people do progress at different rates.

Southgate was 21 before he kicked a ball for the 1st team (he says he had played 100 reserves games by that point), only become a regular at 22, was captain us to promotion at 23 and the youngest premier league captain the next year.
He then went on to play over 50 games for England.

Then you have the odd one who slips through the net - Ian Wright and Jamie Vardy etc

Football has moved on a hell of a lot since then though - careers tend to start much earlier these days. Scouting starts younger, clubs have got better at identifying talent, better at helping these kids with development etc.

You're right (wright) re Ian and Vardy, but those type of cases are so rare - you're talking a handful of times across decades, and I think it will become less and less common as the scouting/recruitment gets more thorough.

Years ago players slipped through the net. Trevor Peake a cracking centre half finally got picked up by Coventry at age 26 after playing at the giddy heights of Nuneaton and Lincoln City. He then played for 8 seasons at the top level hardly missing a match.

I agree, players being missed by the system will become more rare as scouting eyes are everywhere and they tend not to miss the decent kids and amateurs any more.

Yup these days it shouldn't happen. With all the stats they hold on players even at the lower level and of course the internet, and I suspect the scouting systems are more organised than back in the day.

The only players I can see who would slip through the net are ones that weren't professional due to partying and the like and then they wise up as they get a bit older.

I think he is a good passer, quick, extremely strong, and 6 foot 6, he is only 22, the comparison i was making about Ian Wright was he hadn't played a professional game until he was 22, not brought up through the youth system like Baghuelou

JRB wasn't bought through our system either.
