The modern west was built upon those foundations....the world before them wasn't exactly pleasant for the average Joe. I think we should perhaps not be looking to glibly remove them without challenge. We need only look around the world to observe what a lack of freedoms looks like.

I get that. AJP Taylor wrote a brilliant first paragraph to his English History 1914-1945 where he said on the eve of WW1 the Englishman could leave the country without a passport, not have to leave a public house because of licensing laws, and various other personal freedoms. His only contact with the State would probably have been no more than a Policeman or a visit to the Post Office.

But that is now very distant past nostalgia.

I'm not so concerned about the past as I am about the future.
