It's such a weird profession. You spend half the week with nothing to do, earn enough to keep you kept for a lifetime, but then for most players you're pretty much done by 32. How do you ever hope to replicate the experience of 25,000+ fans cheering for you? Or the emotion of scoring an important goal at home? It's not that I have sympathy, just that it must be a really hard throne to climb down off, especially if at some point you reached the very top.

I remember seeing his hat-trick when we beat Portsmouth 5-1 (Southgate also scored a worldie that game). I was gutted when he left for Spurs.

Completely agree. My inclination would be to believe that when you reach the heights of professional football and stardom it may seem that the bubble might never burst. With so many players on astronomical wages these days and ultimately celebrities to boot I do think more support if not training/education should be in place for them post playing career.

In all seriousness, if I were ever in a position of retiring at 30-40 with millions in the back I'd most likely be dead within a short period unless I had something in place to fill that void! As a more recent example, I did think to myself this was a similar scenario contributing to Aaron Lennon's incidents - I wouldn't be surprised to see more examples of this happening and was happy to see him get the help and support he needed.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

The bloke was a very good footballer, but abused his talent by drug taking, he was the first Premier player to be caught. So the signs were there that he is a problem, that is why Palace sold him and never had the England career he should of had.
Not sure he deserves any sympathy for so called mental issues as he has been taking cannabis and ecstasy for 30 odd years, there’s he clue it’s self inflicted.
Some are saying he was one of our own and ex Palace, we bought him for a short period and played more games for Spurs than us.

Technically he wasn't really caught as he (not very cleverly) held his hands up. He was a very good striker but injuries messed his career up.

Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course).

Armstrong may very well have a mental health condition that is affecting his life in which case he needs the appropriate help or just as possible may be a TW@ who failed to make the most of fantastic life circumstances.

Either way I wish the best for him, those around him and would humbly suggest that a combination of being both professionally qualified and close enough to Armstrong would probably be necessary for anyone to diagnose, explain or ridicule his circumstances or equally 'defend' him or his actions... no pun intended. Once again do wish him all the best of course.

I hope my post did not offend you, not at all my intention, just my sense of humour! Take care and best wishes

Not at all Spidey, was merely covering my tracks for my own stupid pun in case I offended anyone else!

All the best to you too sir.

I thought he was a good player for us, seems to have lost his way. I can’t think of many players that have left Palace and gone onto bigger and better things apart from Ian Wright and Gareth Southgate.

off the top of my head these guys all went to have better careers after leaving Palace, many gaining international recognition:

Collymore, Clyne, Watson, Matt Jansen, Fenwick, Martyn, Samson, Allen, Powell, Moses.

I'm sure there are a few more

Don’t think he had a great upbringing. Republic of Ireland courted him for years because of rumours of an Irish grandparent but failed as no one could prove who his Dad was.

Used to bump into him a bit around Victoria. Always dead sound and full of chat. Fine striker too!

Hope things are on the up for him now.

Yes agree he got a wee bit lucky. Don't get me wrong obviously i don't think he should of been sent down but from experience sentencing guidelines involve having to hit certain points and the fact he's been violent in daylight, in a public place including kicking someone on the floor would of hit the extreme side of the threshold.

Like I say I'm pleased he didn't get time but would of been close. Just hope he can sort himself out.

Armstrong brings back fond memories for me supporting Palace and he gets overlooked somewhat as a great Palace player. He was very very good.

Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!!
