You’d think assaulting two people constituted enough of a hate crime without insults being a factor.

Certainly, it should be an irrelevance. I'm just highlighting how dim people acting in such abhorrent ways can be, and hoping that his behavior has led to him maximising the time he has behind bars to think about his actions.

What about the guy arrested who verbally racially abused Ashley Cole allegedly. Where is the line to incarceration. Jail for him will seriously affect how society is going!

I was responding to an earlier post when someone implied that the two gentleman had some partial responsibility because of the way they looked at him. Agreed.

I was responding to an earlier post when someone implied that the two gentleman had some partial responsibility because of the way they looked at him. I don't know of course it just seems that they reacted possibly to a comment but that is speculation on my part.

I suppose it's all in the context.

If someone verbally provokes you then that is a migrating factor to an extent but it still depends upon the circumstances. For example some people might be trying to provoke you into a fight and if they are your own size and age well that is context in your favour.
