In these troubled times, I cling to the words of that great philosopher, Boy George:-

"War is stupid
And people are stupid"

A line I always shout out loud when it comes on is ‘lights going out, and a kick in the balls’ that’s entertainment by the jam, just one of those lyrics that always sticks in my mind.

Another one is ‘I’m invited in for coffee and I give the dog a bone’ in cool for cats by squeeze.

Says it all about me I suppose, what I look for in song lyrics

And most Tom Waites songs are great Lyrics, for me especially the album "Small Change" all the album is great but "step right up" and "the one that got away" are fantastic

“That’s a joke son, I say, that’s a joke.” “Nice boy, but he’s sharp as a throw pillow.” “He’s so dumb he thinks a Mexican border pays rent” “ “Son… I say, son, some people are so narrow minded they can look through a keyhole with both eyes.”__ Forhorn Leghorn

In the fifties and early sixties, lyrics were often disguising wanting to have sex and not being able to. Or teenage boys' habits during these testosterone-fuelled years.

It can be an amusing game to decipher those lyrics. For instance, the Who's 'Pictures Of Lily' I often thought was about having a hand shandy over a photo.

Then there's the Everly Brothers 'All I Have To Do is Dream'.

If you substitute W***k for dream, it says it all and is a giggle.

The Lyrics:

Dream, dream, dream, dream
Dream, dream, dream, dream
When I want you in my arms
When I want you and all your charms
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Dream, dream, dream, dream

When I feel blue in the night
And I need you to hold me tight
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Dream

I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine
Anytime night or day
Only trouble is, gee whiz
I'm dreamin' my life away

I need you so that I could die
I love you so and that is why
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Dream, dream, dream, dream
Dream

I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine
Anytime night or day
Only trouble is, gee whiz
I'm dreamin' my life away

I need you so that I could die
I love you so and that is why
Whenever I want you, all I have to do is
Dream, dream, dream, dream
Dream, dream, dream, dream

I'm a smutty child, me. Lol

"Now Ernie dragged him from his van and beneath the blazing sun, they stood there face to face and Ted went for his bun."

It doesn't get any better. I don't know if anyone's mentioned the Beatles' Day Tripper and how 'she's a prick teaser' got past the censors.

'The smash of glass and rumble of boots'. I always thought Paul Weller was an overrated songwriter (bit too 'sixth form' for me), but he was dead on with that one - about how s*** growing up in the Seventies could feel like at times.

I've always been rather concerned about 'show me with the way to the next little girl' in The Alabama Song by Bertolt Brecht.
