So it seems that, on here at least, he's still guilty but has just bought his way out of it.

That report also refers to 'new material that has come to light' - maybe they have found social media posts that someone has been telling porkies somewhere along the line. It has been known for this to happen when they see an easy payday in compensation.

Innocent until proven guilty!

When a crime has a conviction rate < 1% and we’re talking about a multi millionaire defendant, I think that’s a reasonable take away.

Have you listened to the audio? There is no excusing it away.

Yet new material that has come to light seems to have done so!

I suspect this is part of it, there are abysmally low conviction rates in this country. His defence would that it was rough play and implied to be consensual. The trial then becomes an attempt to prove she didn't consent.

Its also been going on for ages and the hearing wasn't due until Nov. So its also sucking up a huge amount of her and her families life, for something that she might not even win.

But I also wouldn't be surprised if money is involved. What if Mason offered her 20% of all future earnings to walk away from the case...?

Then she has to decide if she'd rather have him put away for x years, or be set for life at 19.

I think there is an argument for some defendants legally paying their way out of some minor crimes but not this type of crime. It already happens in many countries.

If only his father had "pulled out" no one would be having to work this sh1t out.

The legal system owes it to the public and the defendant to issue far more clarity on this. The legal system including the CPS shrouds itself in secrecy. They say the law is an ass and this fully supports that view. Give us clarity.

I have some sympathy with this but I'm also a little concerned by just how willing some are in their certainty of the lives of others.

There is a difference between someone being an arsehole in a dysfunctional relationship and rape.

I remember there being some weird aspects to this case and some questions, however it seems that, while this woman wasn't happy with what was going on it also looks like she didn't want to destroy his life either.

I think the question here is should the state be a moral busy body when questions exist about the situation and they aren't being backed by the partner.

I must admit it does.

It's not easy to go through a trial and the outcome and process are far from certain. So I concur with your view really that a point of agreement may have been reached, but of course could easily be wrong.

I doubt someone like Greenwood will avoid further problems down the line. Innocent in law, but that doesn't mean that people have to like or respect him from what's out there, or pretend that his conduct is normal.
