The commentary pointed out something which surprised me last night, (until Leicester beat Burnley) we were the highest scoring team in the PL outside the top 6. Imagine what we could do if one of our strikers could start scoring more regularly!

In theory Benteke and Edouard should be ahead of Mateta in the pecking order.
Benteke has a better pedigree, more experience and is better in the air and hold up play.
Edouard has better control, quicker feet and looks to be the better footballer.
But are they more effective than Mateta?
If you watch the first goal yesterday Mateta laid the ball off to Gallagher near the half way line and then turned and bust a gut to run forty yards to get to the penalty area where he converted Zaha's cross.
For his deflected goal v Watford, Mateta was facing the wrong way but turned and shot instantly rather than attempting to lay it off or try some intricate footwork to work an opportunity.
For the Kouyate goal v Stoke when Zaha got the ball on the right most of the players burst to the near post, but Mateta took a couple of steps back to make space for himself to receive a pass for a shot which he scuffed, but it lead to the goal.
These are game changing moments, which ungainly as Mateta is, one has to take into consideration.
He's by no means the finished article but I'm warming to him.
Benteke hasn't the mobility to play the required role and Edouard so far has shown a tendency to disappear from games, although it's early days and I'm sure he can improve.

Mateta seems to have that bit of selfishness, or to be kinder he takes responsibility for shooting, needed for a goal scorer - if a shot is on he takes it. When Clive Allen was at Tottenham he would shoot from the corner flag but he got 49 goals one season.
I think you’re right about Eduoard; he’s good running with the ball. Maybe the contrast with Mateta could make a good partnership.

When Benteke came on yesterday it sadly exposed his shortcomings. He has no energy. He is very slow and lacks control on the ball. He doesn’t fit into the fast moving high press game we now pursue. This will surely be his last season with us. I’m sure in a different league at his age he could maybe squeeze a couple more seasons. But he has fallen noticeably short of the Premier pace which to be honest he hasn’t had since his Villa days.

Apart from one season (his first) Benteke has taken plenty from the club and given nothing in return. Held the club back with his over-inflated fee and wages. As all can see, when he comes on for 15 minutes he still can't be bothered to put in a shift. He'll be gone soon, and we have more than adequate replacements.
Mateta has that nuisance factor, and is also working hard for the team. He's deserved his goals, because he makes the effort to get into the box at the right time, a scrappy goal is still a goal, just like yesterday, goalscorer's instinct. He's young and with good coaching can only improve.
I think Mateta and Eduoard would make a good combo, but PV doesn't want to play 4-4-2, so it's difficult to comment.

Mateta is fitting into the style of play more and more and is a lot more difficult to knock off the ball, unlike Tekkers and Edouard. Although I see a place for Edouard when the ball is at his feet in the box.

You could see against Wolves Mateta links up well with players around him and you can see the other players like him.

Really impressive performance from Mateta yesterday. Movement was great, linked up nicely, shot when given half a chance.

Watching his goal back, his movement and desire is actually quite impressive. wins the header, and then peels off wanting Connor to go long to him, Wilf gets in and then JP sprints across the defender to make the move to the front post.

I know it sounds simple, but without the movement, Wilf's cross is picked up by the keeper.

As well as being a decent passer when laying off to the midfield Mateta has become the best at pressing amongst the strikers. This effective pressure on the opposition when in possession was clear in both the Wolves and Watford wins.

I ain't got nuthin' funny to say. Sorry.

Funny isn’t it...all those who said he should be sent back to Mainz have gone a little quiet...wonder why.... Dougie has done a great job and got him for a steal of a price if he continues to knock them in....

Crikey! I keep finding myself agreeing with you this morning.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.
