Ah takes me back! I used to be a programme seller from 71-74 mainly in the Arthur Waite at the Holmesdale/Park Road entrance. When I started I think programmes were 7p and went up to 12p in 74. It was a pain when someone gave me a pound note for one programme! I usually sold around 800 programmes by kick-off and then was quickly back to cash up and see most of the game for free. Used to sell at Wembley too, my record sales being 4,000 @ 10p each at the Spurs v Norwich League Cup final in 1973. I was selling outside the stadium at the top of Wembley Way and had to stagger back to the programme room on my own weighed down with all that cash. Security in those days was pretty poor! I was a contemporary of the legendary Side-O. I seem to remember the pay was not bad - about £3.50 for a home game and up to £10 for Wembley.

I was lucky enough to be in Paris in 1980 when France played England in the Rugby Union Five Nations. This was the year that England, under Bill Beaumont's captaincy and with Clive Woodward in the side, achieved the Grand Slam. My friend and I bought tickets for the game and into the Parc des Princes we went. In the stadium corridor, I spotted a programme seller and I asked him "how much?" in French "Ça fait combien?". Given the background hubbub, I didn't property hear his reply given in French, but I assumed he had said that the programmes were free. Accordingly I said "Ah; merci" and held out my hand to take one. He handed one over but with a slightly strange look on his face. When I got back to my seat, I dwelt on the brief interchange and with horror I realised that he'd actually said "çe que vous voulez, Monsieur" - in other words the programmes were subject to a voluntary donation, sir! Mortified, I dashed back out in order to find him so as to apologize and offer him some money. Sadly he had moved on and was nowhere to be seen. Forty-two years later, I still get a tight feeling in my guts when I remember the incident. That poor bloke who dealt with me in such good faith, but who ultimately must have thought what an English c*** I was.

I recall back in the 80s a fervent supporter who was regularly seen with a brown envelope containing programmes.
