I'm not so sure that's a good sign as it could just mean that they use more preservatives.

I do most of my shopping at Sainsbury out of habit rather than out of perceived quality issues and find that some of their use by dates are shocking especially the veg.

I tend to go shopping early and on Friday when I went to do the weekend shopping the Maris Piper spuds all had a sell by date of that day and the carrots just had two days life left in them

We did the very thing not long ago Stirling. Not for financial reasons more out of boredom or experimentation.

I can assure you planning out a week of meals with your wife is the proverbial mix of banging your head against a brick wall and watching paint dry if my experience is anything to go by.

We have eventually settled upon smaller shopping trips and an agreement on a daily basis is to be reached on deciding dinner. We do try to utilise food cupboard/fridge stalwarts better however TBH I am not entirely sure it has made any difference to our pockets but a more cohesive unit may offer very different results!

Mine seems quite happy to leave it all up to me which makes life much easier

I'm mainly talking about fruit, veg, salad bags, cold meat etc.
All the same stuff as the big four.
Ham etc has a two week or more date and veg up to a week.
Try it out and you might be pleasantly surprised.
