Before the Iranian revolution the Shah ordered a load of weapons from the UK and paid £400m up front. Before we could deliver them he was overthrown then you had the American hostage crisis and sanctions which are still in force today.

There was never any dispute as to who owned the money (Iran) but this has dragged on through various Conservative and Labour governments.

My guess is that the Iranians decided to force our hand by taking hostages and we did not want to be seen to giving in. Iran is further complicated in that there are 3 power groups, the Ayatollahs, the Revolutionary Guard, and the elected president and Parliament. They all have their own agendas and frequently work against each other.

I'm glad that she has been released but this was geopolitics. It suits us and the Americans to start being nice to Iran as we want their oil. The Iranians need to sell their oil to get their economy going, and so the dance continues.

Nicely summed up.

Frankly anyone from here travelling to Iran is a liability.

We have given 400 million to a state that hates the west....we haven't always been blameless in that but that's the dynamic.

The elites want you to hate who they hate, based upon how they want the world to be. So just as they once called Stalin 'Uncle Joe' when it suited them they will justify whatever they do using any form of words required.

Whilst I'm delighted that she has been freed to back to her family, let's not forget that as an Iranian, she went home to Iran to see her Iranian family on her Iranian passport.

When there's trouble, she's suddenly British, and it's all our fault!

If that had been Tommy Robinson being held in Iran they would have paid Iran 400 million to keep him.

But because it's an Iranian/British Blairite type couple....these are their people....here's your 400 million....oh and suddenly let's be friendlier as you have oil and we're part of starting cold war 2.

I have been lucky enough to go to Iran many times, always been extremely well treated, wonderful hospitality, good food & had many delightful conversations with Iranian people in some far flung corners of the country -

So whilst there may be challenges to overcome between the two governments it would be wrong to consider that everything Iranian is troublesome.

If you looked European would your safety have been guaranteed?

I think I remember Jon Stewart saying similar to this when he took his film project over there.....it didn't go well.

The kind of wanting to wipe Israel off the face of the earth is also kind of a big problem.

In fairness Becky it's because she is British that she got into trouble in the first place. If she was just Iranian I doubt they would have arrested her.

I do look European & as an "Inglesee" I was always well treated -
I speak a little Arabic bit no Farsi & I am always polite to the people that I meet, for sure it doesn't guarantee my safety but if I speak as I find, visiting Iran & interacting with them was never a problem -

Now if I was there making a film, recording stuff, maybe not showing the country or its people in the best light etc etc etc perhaps I would have had a very different experience ?

I would love to go I have spoken to people who visited before the current problems, they never had any trouble from the locals it's the politics that has caused this. Most urban Iranians are friendly to the west it is the ignorant peasants and the politically motivated who are not.

You would not judge the UK people based on the actions of Extinction Rebellion.

I think you've exposed a huge hole in geopolitical thinking these days and the power of propaganda, sorry, media.

I would quite happily state that I could in no way be encouraged to visit Iran, for any reason, as to do so I would consider it within the realms of suicidal.

Having said that, all we ever hear about are extremists from all stretches of life in the media, as that's what is newsworthy and I still hold an unfashionable opinion that:

No matter where you go in this world, the vast majority of people, on their own, are decent, well meaning beings.

I do also like the notion that a lot of these places have certain laws, practices etc in place, which are rightly condemned however the apparent view is that they have a far superior democracy to ours in which every single person has wholeheartedly endorsed them.

Far too much coverage being given to this woman as if she's a returning hero.

As someone else said, given it's exactly the fact she's from Britain that has meant she's been locked up for 6 years, I think this is a very strange take.

Also, there very clearly was blame attached to our government so it was, at least partly, 'our' fault.

Who knows why she was chosen - wrong place wrong time ?
being a woman (more international sympathy to generate) ?
Not connected to international companies (less sanction material)

Any other of a bunch of reasons ?

For sure she has had a tough time of things along with her family, hopefully they can now get on with the rest of their lives.
