It’s strange that AWB is not regarded as good enough going forward at Man U as he used to be a winger. Maybe it just shows what a master stroke it was by Richard Shaw turning him into a right back, because he was never going to make it as a winger

I was a big fan of AWB and was sorry to see him go. But now, I can see that we did well to sell him for a huge profit and we've moved on. Regardless of which side they play I am of the opinion that Mitchell is a far more rounded player and has been immense for us on occasion this season, viz Monday. He gets my vote. Very pleasant, unassuming young bloke too. Wouldn't want us to go after AWB. We're doing just fine without him thanks.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

My work meant I ended up meeting with Freedman a few months after the AWB sale, and although he never said it outright, I got the impression they were VERY happy with the £50m fee and they already had half an idea that he was never going to be that level of player. He's got an excellent skill set, but he needs the right manager/system around him to be effective in the modern game - United buying him to play as a progressive wing back was never going to work.

I'd still take AWB back - when he played for us, nothing and no one got past him. Mitchell is an amazing talent but I can't say the same (yet).

I don't mind admitting I wasn't sure Mitchell was the answer at the beginning of the season. His defensive qualities have never been in doubt but I felt he was very limited going forward and almost petrified to actually try and take someone on. I'm pleased to see that he is slowly rectifying and improving the attacking side of his game. It has taken some time but he is starting to gain more confidence going forward. If he had the forward side to his game that Van Aanholt had, coupled with his obvious defensive talent had then he would be an unbelievable player. The future is certainly bright for him though.
Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!! |

His attacking play has come on leaps and bounds through the season and there has been a definite plan to use him in co-ordination with Wilf down the left. I wonder whether PV may have been able to make more of AWB in a similar scenario. Part of his downfall at United has been the way they have used him. Initially he was a big hit as he was so much better defensively than anyone else they had in that slot. No evidence that OGS showed any inclination to coach him into being a more effective wingback and give him a precise role there in attack.
