I am deeply aware we have people on this site living with Prostate Cancer. Additionally, and not to be confused, one in three men over 50 has an enlarged prostate. This is not a sign of potential cancer. My GP is awful and so I hadn't been tested using the Prostate Specific Antigen test for years Just to let you all know, it's a lateral flow style test, takes 20 minutes and can be bought e.g. from the CoOp for £15.70 by post. A simple finger prick, lift the blood onto the test and you are done Please do one if you haven't

Thanks for the heads up. Sounds like a very good idea to check every now and again.

I had a prostate check done by a female doctor around 2 years ago. An experience I would have been charged approximately E300 for if I was in Amsterdam. Seriously, anything that reduces the inconvenience and potential embarrassment, by enabling people to get themselves checked is a really good idea.

My GP monitors my Prostate 3 monthly with a PSA test after I had radiotherapy treatment in 2014. How dreadful that your GP, Mapletree, is slow to give you a test. I had no idea it was possible to buy a DIY kit and if there is a reluctance by your own doctor to test any of you then it is a great idea to take matters into your own hands. As it happens, my latest test showed an increase so I have an appointment with the local Urology dept next week for further investigations. Basically chaps, whether done by a nurse at your GP surgery or the DIY kit Mapletree suggests, and if you're over 40, have the test. If Prostate Cancer is found early it can be treated effectively these days. Nothing to worry about.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

3 or 4 years ago my doctor disdainfully dismissed the idea of me having a routine PSA test basically on the grounds that it isn't a definitive test only an risk indicator, and that as I had no symptoms it wasn't worth it. It did get me to wondering whether GPs had been asked to reduce the number of referrals for PSA blood tests to limit the number of follow-up diagnostic procedures that have to be carried out, with most showing that there is no cancer. Hopefully not the case as of course a some will give a cancer diagnosis. A couple of months back I did bring up the subject of PSA testing with another doctor and she said that the practice don't have a policy of recommending routine PSA tests, but that if you ask for one they are obliged to arrange one. This I did mainly for peace of mind rather than from the presence of any worrying symptoms - I am in my late 60s so am reaching a higher risk category. Fortunately my reading was low ( although I know this doesn't prove you don't have PC)
