To beat Chelsea, Palace needed to be at their absolute best. That's in terms of performance and tactics. Then hope that Chelsea are having a collective off day. Then hope for a slice of luck.

At half time yesterday I thought we were doing enough to stay in the game but no more than that. I also figured that Tuchel would not tolerate another 45 minutes of below par performances from his team.

As is often the case against the best teams, a turnover of possession was harshly punished. But it was undeniable that Chelsea had stepped up a gear in the second half and we would struggle to hold them.

I was surprised at PV's team selection and tactics, and for an hour we were competitive but little more than that. It's easy to critisise a safety first approach, but also easy to understand his first intention was to frustrate them and hope to nick a goal and hang onto it.

What next needs to be a concerted effort from the players to get some more points on the board and achieve a decent finish to the season. Sentiments that PV has already expressed.

Yep, good post. Pretty much what I'd have written if I'd got there first. I wouldn't argue with any of it.

For the rest of the season, the benchmark for progress for me has always been 50 points. The first few years after promotion, 40 points was the target; now, I think 50 points is a reasonable standard if we want to raise the bar. In recent seasons 39-43 points-ish has been our level but I see no reason why we shouldn't at least aim for 50 this year. It would require 13 points from 7 games which is probably four wins, a draw, and two losses; tough but not impossible, and I think with 50 points, regardless of league position (though it would be no worse than 10th-ish) I'd be very happy. To be honest, with the number of points we've left on the table this year (Brighton H, Arsenal A, Chelsea H, etc.) we should almost have got there already.

Personally I will be surprised if we attain 50 pts.

An even first half when Chelsea were not at their best, I expected them to play with far greater aplomb in the second period and this proved to be the case.

They were the much better team after the break and overall deserved their win.We never really laid a glove on them in the second half and lost our way with the substitutions.

We are a 'Work in progress' and in transition, and I never expected us to reach the final. We are simply not in their class.
Had we pulled off an unexpected victory we would only had to play Liverpool in the final !

I really want a strong finish in the league to propel us up the table.

Pretty much how I saw it as well. Vieira is getting stick for his substitutions, but don't think it would of made any difference who he brought on. We were getting overrun at that stage, he had to try something we weren't in the game.
If fans were honest, they never expected us to win, even less winning the cup, with Liverpool waiting next.

Rubbish. You make out they are unbeatable and we had a 1% chance. Chelsea dont need an off day to be beaten. They are not Gods. They have had a full strength squad out and played well plenty of times this season and still been beaten. They actually were the better team for most of the game against Brentford who beat them 4 0.
All this putting Chelsea on a pedastol is small club mentality nonsense. They are a bigger and wealthier club than us and have greater resources than us. But we have built a team that can compete with the big clubs. If that was not the case how come we have easily beaten Spurs and Arsenal, Should have got something against Liverpool, deserved the win against West Ham and have not conceded a goal against City?
To suggest we need four or five things to go our way (and a big slice of luck) to get a result against Chelsea is frankly disrespectful to our players and coaching staff. They are way better than that

Its the strength in depth that is the big advantage the big clubs have over everyone else. All of Chelsea subs, would start in our team, 2 of our best players couldnt get in Chelseas team or squad, Gallagher and Guehi.
Next year with 5 subs, it will be worse. Its all designed to help the dominance of the big clubs.

It's quite clear to me that without CG we are a different team, I would look at now as a pre season run for next year.

CG should now predominantly be on the bench in favour for our starters for next year. We need to see what we have, to then decide what we need to do in terms of signings for the summer.

To keep using CG til the end is only kidding ourselves - we are secure for this season and should utilize that.

Chelsea have done us no favours what so ever, so why should we to them and keep CG in the shop window or gaining game time - this is nothing personal, he's a fantastic player, but he isn't ours or our future.

A mistake opened us up and that's understandable given Cheslea's squad and experience.

we have had a fantastic season and it's not even over.

We have a manager in his first season in the Premier league, so let's cut him some slack. We did have a not too testing route to the semi final and when you come up against a club with resources like Chelsea then it was going to be difficult. We needed everything to go perfectly in the build up but with Gallagher missing and problems with Mitchell and Olise and Clyne we were always going to be up against it.
Having said all that I felt that the Mateta withdrawal was a bit strange, because we had no focal point for the attack. Zaha was asked to play in the middle which might work against lesser opposition. Then to bring Benteke on seemed to be an admission that he got it wrong. Bringing Olise on late, made me think back to Ian Wright being brought on late in the cup final. Many wise managers have said that you have to start your best players so that you see how long they can manage rather than guess how long you think they will last.
Chelsea are reigning European, World champions , they didn't get there by being naive, they used cynical tactics to beat us so we should hold our heads high and just enjoy the ride wherever it takes us.

My view is that thus far we have enjoyed a season where the football has been far more enjoyable than in recent campaigns,we are a 'Work in progress' and in transition and the portents are encouraging and promising, however I would not go so far as to label it in the 'Fantastic' category.

New manager, new players, new style of football, accordingly I have always kept a lid on my expectations whilst being cautiously optimistic about our prospects.

I absolutely understand what you say. It makes sense to ditch him now and learn to play without him. But, we have him until the end of the season, paid up already. If we ditch him and lose a few places, that has no value to us, apart from realising we need him. However, if we play him and we gain places we will have more money in the 'war chest' to replace him (A hypothetical four place swing is worth more than he will have cost us, so would effectively pay for his loan period). And if we lose places whilst playing him, we have a bigger problem than we realise.

I think I know which the management will choose.

1. I am ecstatically pleased with having PV as our manager.
2. I think PV has achieved miracles and needs to be acclaimed.
3. I hope PV stays for a long time as CPFC manager.
4. As PV keeps saying, his players needs to keep improving, and
I believe that sentiment applies to him as a manager too.
5. PV is not perfect and I am not going to pretend that he is.
6. I do not want him gone. I hope for the opposite in fact.

That said, regarding the semi final:

1. He screwed up. With what he's achieved so far I would be very mean not to forgive that. But he screwed up. I know it. YOU know it. Never a chance in hell with the line-up he picked and the tactics he adopted.

Now some will angrily retort: "Oh shut up! You're not the manager! He is! We were just beaten by a far better team! Olise, Hughes, Clyne etc must have been injured!

Sorry... If you are fit enough to be on the bench you are fit enough to play as Olise showed. Sometimes, getting too much praise about your performance (as a manager) can go to your head. I think it went to his head. I saw Ward high on the right wings several times in the first half trying to reach Andersen's long crosses... SEVERAL TIMES! Even if Wardy (Bless HIM!!!) did reach those crosses...WTF could he possibly do with it to create a chance??? We are not good enough as a team to have the luxury of weak pieces of the jigsaw. And Chelsea are too good. Ward on, together with 'hang back' tactics, spelt disaster. Then when we were 2-0 down the silly subs...

You know, I know, we all know, for Palace to have had a chance, Eze in place of Conor (I do not believe that Palace are so weak that we are useless without Gallagher) and strict tactics to go at their heels for the get-go, try and force a mistake, stop them playing (which we achieved with Man City and Arse and Everton and others), steal an early goal and get them rattled and freaking out and under pressure. Now, THAT still may not have worked against a very good Chelsea team, but we all know that was our biggest hope - not sitting back, allowing them to play, soaking pressure, which we have proven is not our strong point.

So, please do not reply with insulting accusations at me for wanting to crucify PV and being a lousy supporter. I just want to call things true. PV stuffed up - okay - let's move on...

The thing is, we'll never know. So it's pointless speculating really. We may have gone at them just as you say, left ourselves too open and ended up losing 5-0. (Which to be fair, is no worse off than 2-0 in a knockout game.) Either way, I think to say Vieria screwed up is a tad harsh. We were well in it for the first 45.

Joel Ward is many things, one of which is not a wing back.

Nick Pope off Burnley, a decent young right back, and something close to Connor and we will be in good shape for next year. Offload Trekkers, Jairo, Luka, Tomkins, Kelly, and bring some of the 23s through.
