I never understand why the word 'mathematically' is needed here. Isn't the word 'safe' sufficient?

Premier League 1992/93. Palace did a lap of honour after their last home game because everybody presumed Palace were "safe".

Unfortunately, Oldham, who were 8 points adrift in the drop zone, with three games left to play in just seven days, suddenly discovered how to win and won all of them, saving themselves and relegating Palace in the process.

To me, bearing in mind that 1992/93 season, being "mathematically safe" blows away any worries that history might repeat itself

Nope, still can’t see the need for mathematically. In the Oldham context, clearly Palace were not safe as Oldham could overtake us. Palace would have been safe if it had been impossible for Oldham to finish higher. So Palace were not safe but simply unlikely to get relegated.

I suppose it reinforces the description of the position you are in but technically it’s not required. Not sure if it’s a quirk in the English language. We’d need a cunning linguist to help us out there!

I am definitely not the wordsmith required to solve that conundrum but - since we are exploring this I would just like to add -
whether its safe or mathematically safe it only takes a team to go into liquidation unexpectedly & get docked 12 points (or whatever the current penalty is for that eventuality) & the earlier calculation goes out the window - so maybe its mathematically safe barring unforeseen eventualities ?

Just saying -

OK its a warm day & I have had just about enough of work to be going over to the fridge for a beer -

Maybe it should be, "Safe, but hoping and praying teams below us don't blow the form book out of the window", and plain old just "Safe"

Calvert-Lewin seemed to tweak his hamstring at the end of the game and Rondon is out for the season after that hilarious red card. It was almost like he decided he didn't want to play and so looked to get a red card. Leeds and Everton look awful at the moment, running around like headless chickens. I reckon Burnley will beat Villa who looked very average against us. If we play like we have been of late and Everton play like they have in the last couple of games then we could very well beat them.

Just for entertainment I hope all three are in the mix come next Sunday.

Is that the same Villa that easily beat Burnley (at Burnley) in their last match before they played us? The same Villa that has won 2 and drawn 2 of their last 5 games, unbeaten in the last 3?

That might be a little premature (hopefully) if Everton get docked points for Thursday night or financial irregularities.

Not a chance that points will be deducted over Thursday night.

Financial irregularities though....you would like to think so. But the FA, gawd bless 'em, have taken years to ' investigate ' Man City's finances. Chelsea were allowed to operate with a £1.5 billion loan. You can't trust or rely upon the FA to protect the integrity of the game by taking actions that would ultimately reflect badly on themselves as enablers.

An independent Regulator, one that is pro active not reactive, is what is required.

Maybe Platini, Blatter or Lord Coe could run it. I’m sure they would do the right thing.

Agreed. You have to wonder why it takes Burnley and Leeds to complain before the FA agrees to investigate. Everton are at least twice over the spending limit and they never even hid this.

The FA has cut clubs some slack due to COVID losses but apparently the amount that Everton are claiming is related to that and therefore not included is significantly higher than any other club. That plus they went on a spending spree in January does seem to indicate an attitude that they don't care.

The reporter who broke the story does not believe anything will happen this season so by the time it does (assuming they are guilty) it will be too late. Another example of a club buying their way out of trouble.

I hope the government presses forward with its independent regulator it is shameful that the FA the "guardian of the game" is so weak and useless.
