When I saw yesterday's line up, I was surprised but on reflection thought it clever.

Southampton would have prepared their strategy, expecting Ward-Prowse to do his usual job of niggling Wilf. Him being benched through them into a muddle, and they didn't know what to expect, so went into their shell. A rested Wilf, with a point to prove, then came on with Southampton on the back foot hoping to protect a lead.

The rest is history.

Also by playing Wilf up against the centre backs Ward Prowse was not in a position to do the the niggling, while Wilf's good close control made it difficult for the centre backs to get too tight.

A few other points mentioned in this post :

- Olise did seem very reluctant to use his right foot yesterday (was that the one that was injured ?) and it made it easier for the left back who more or less knew that he would be cutting inside.
- I know Eze scored with his left, but he is very right footed and the only decent crosses in the first half from that side was when he interlinked with Schlupp who put over the cross when Gallagher headed wide.
- Clyne did really well did get on the end of Ayew's slightly overhit pass and probably didnt get a chance to look up, so played over the obvious targets and Eze did very well coming in from quite a long way back.
- I thought Southampton were quite poor, much worse than when they played us at Selhurst Park. With a bit more composure and a bit of luck we could have won by more.

It was looked at, commentator mentions it on the MOTD review. What is even more boggling is, why didn't VAR give it? It's a clear pen.

Commentator on Sky match recording said that Conor went down too easily. In fact he rode another tackle and did his best to stay on his feet rather than go down. But he was still trying to keep his balance when the second tackle went on and that is what floored him. Viewed more than once, it was a clear pen - unlike the notorious Friend/Pawson incident v Liverpool, which they viewed at least a dozen times before giving the pen (which it wasn't).

In retrospect, I loved seeing the Southampton players so jubilant when they scored their poxy in-off-the-crossbar header from a Ward-Cheat-Prowse corner. I loved it because we knew what was coming: a great fightback and a winner for Wilf after being booed by the home crowd. Is that why he pushed his ears forward with his hands after he scored - was that directed at the home support (or at the Palace)?
All in all a very satisfying afternoon, especially after the disappointing previous three games.

Interesting if you look at the table. Everyone past 8th place has a negative goal differential except Palace at +3 currently.

Yes, I was looking at the table yesterday morning and noticed this. It can't be by chance. PV was vital to a defensively resolute Arsenal side and I sure he has brought that experience to the team.

Doesn’t seem to have stopped Mahrez being a very good player

If he's half as good as Mahrez then great. Have a look at his goal against Leicester last season.

Totally agree. Their gameplan went out the window. As I have previously said, how interesting that every report I have read mentions the treatment given to Wilf by Leeds. Nothing post Leeds match and no condemnation of Phillio’s comments

IMO within a couple of seasons Olise will be playing for City.
I agree about players being able to play with either foot, something my dad a,ways drummed into me. However doesn’t seem to matter so much now

What i liked was we actually picked up extra points with an injury time winner. Is that not the first time this season we have done so? I know Leeds Brighton and Arsenal got injury time goals against us but it is the first time we have done so this season or is my dodgy memory getting worst?

In fact only 6 teams in the PL have a better goal difference than us.

If we then delve further into the stats. we see that all teams below us have scored fewer goals than Palace, as well as three teams above us.

It's also worth mentioning that only 4 teams have lost fewer games than us.
