You could conceivably no longer be gay. I know that may offend some people but you could stop living a 'gay lifestyle' and date the opposite sex exclusively.

The real problematic issue with Islam in my opinion is that is has been intertwined with ethnicity. I live in the most secular society in the 'muslim world', yet even the young people who couldn't give a s*** about going to the mosque call themselves muslims.

My point wasn't about legal consequence, it was about the fact that if you choose to use your freedom of speech that might end up with other consequences like losing your job, being attacked by those using their own right to freedom of speech, loss of sponsorship deals, etc. It would be an odd world if you could just say whatever you liked and no-one was allowed to respond. As sydtheeagle so eloquently put, the UK also does not have absolute freedom of speech, although in this instance I don't think any laws have been broken.

I would also say that when it come to freedom of speech even the biggest advocates draw the line somewhere; in fact many libertarians are against talking about LBTQ+ issues in schools and constantly complain about BLM being given a platform to speak. I would argue that what many really want is the freedom to say what they want, but don't want to hear from those who oppose their beliefs.

The big problem with freedom of speech is that not everyone has the same platform so there is a power imbalance. In this case Kouyate is in a position of influence as a PL footballer and so he would be naïve to think there would be no consequence to his actions. As a well paid employee of Crystal Palace what he does and says outside the club in a public forum reflects on the club. He's not a 17-year-old, he's a grown man. He may be fortunate that Vieira kicked someone, as that may take the spotlight off of him.

Personally I don't believe in organised religion at all, but I support the right of people to follow their religious beliefs providing they don't infringe on anyone else. I live in a country where abortion is illegal but I support the right of Catholics to follow their beliefs; however, I also publicly oppose the ban on abortion as I am pro-choice. The two might seem contradictory, but as Fitzgerald said, the ability to hold two seemingly contradictory ideas inside your head at the same time is a sign of a first rate intelligence
