It can all be boiled down to the simplicity of:

1. To do well in league, win cups etc. you need to win games
2. To win games you need to score goals, more than the opponent.
3. To score goals you need a good striker
4. There must be some hidden gem out there that we should be able to find and therefore buy for under £20 million and all will be OK with the world as they'll knock in 50 a season.

Unfortunately the world does not work like that.

Far from the OP (I forgotseded who?) being controversial I think the original post was very good. I myself often fall victim to the thought pattern demonstrated above. Asides from Kane, Haaland, Mbappe and a veteran Lewandowski I fail to see many forwards in the game who'd guarantee goals.

Again, very good OP and if funds are available I'd like some additions/reinforcement in midfield and maybe a new RB please. AWB is a romantic thought but I actually thought Clyne was getting back to top level past few months and again, unless we have a sure bet gem, I'm happy to wait another season if necessary.

Guaita

Clyne - Anderson - Guehi - Mitchell

New player, Hughes/Kouyate/McArthur

Gallagher replacement/Eze

Olise Mateta Zaha

Butland
New, promising CB perhaps?
Ward (a new and improved one for me, looks better and better)
One of those mentioned above
JMac/replacement/One of those mentioned above
Schlupp
Ayew/new winger perhaps... or preferably
Edouard
I've forgotten how many will be on subs bench next season

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Unless Benteke goes, I don't actually think we need a striker. Even then it would be rotation/backup.

Édouard should be given time to improve. Zaha will become a striker. Mateta will improve a bit with experience.

Reinvigorating midfield and RB is more important, and maybe in goal too. Eze has looked good in the past few weeks, so getting him and Olise to where we hope they can get to would give us as many options as buying a centre forward would do. The game is way more fluid these days, and teams are less reliant on a target man anyway.

Ultimately it depends on what we have to spend and who is available, but striker is not where I would see the most urgent need to invest. Replacing Gallagher and the ageing midfield is more important.

I am in full agreement.
Mateta is a 'worker' but lacks skills whereas Edouard is more skilful and moves better and should be given a chance - but we desperately need a more creative midfield. Kouyate, Luka can't pass creatively. Hughes is better and McArthur works his socks off but none of these can be called a 'midfield general'

I genuinely believe that Christian Eriksen could be the answer.

Mateta is the best we have at the moment, Edouard has to improve a lot to be even as good as Mateta, Benteke is total rubbish, Plange we dont know about yet.

Our manager has said we need to improve in our decision making in the final third and take the chances we create. This is a nudge to the players that they are not producing. Unless they improve the manager will be wanting new strikers. I suspect he has his doubts about them.COYP

Chances are created, in the main, from midfield. We don't need at this moment to change the strike force. We need to upgrade our midfield players, particularly with Gallagher going. Also getting numbers into the box when we attack, another thing that Gallagher added with his energetic play.
I'd expect to see another hard working box to box midfield general player come in, to complement Eze's natural ability.
Schlupp, Kouyate, Hughes, don't have it in them. McArthur will probably be a bit part player, Jairo will probably leave so the midfield is an area where we need investment, not the forward line.

JP Mateta should certainly be given more time.. he’s improved significantly under Viera and that’s only the start.. think he will continue to improve.. he’ll definitely score more goals.. his pressing is really good... I think Luke Plange is a completely different sort of player who’ll probably play off Mateta... Edouard is also a completely different again... we have a great mix...

A lot of sense getting spoken today!

The strikers are decent, not top draw but decent.

Being the size club we are, we cant afford to buy the finished article. We have to find these 15m players and take a bit of a gamble.

JPM looked like a gamble to fair, but has now come good. OE started great, but has gone off the boil.

But as someone else stated, its only really the top couple of clubs that have superstar strikers. And our attacking unit is really strong.

If the goals are spread amongst the team, the role of the front man isn't so focused on scoring.

Take West Ham for example, they only really have Antonio up front, and he hardly ever scores.

My view is that there may be a possible misconception that the CF needs to be our main goal getter. In many ways the output of our strikers simply matches the trends in the modern game. The CF is no longer there just to score goals and there is a firm trend to inverted wingers being the main supply line.

Second point is our CFs scored 15 goals between them last season. To what extent does it matter that those goals were shared between 3 players? 15 goals is a decent return and not far short of 20 which is probably the optimum for a club of our size/ranking.

General thought is though that the problems lie in how well our forward line combines to create the right number and type of chances. We often looked dominant and/or pretty last season without actually creating that much.

Perfectly happy here to run with Olise Mateta/Edouard Zaha next season with the two inverted wingers combining to be our most likely source of goals with the central forward creating space and chipping in. To make this happen it would help to have a RB who can overlap on the right as Mitchell has on the left to allow Olise to cut in to even more effect.

How would you define premiership standard?

We aren't in the market for a Haaland or Kane.

I didn't get this comment either. You could argue a number of teams aren't PL standard but their Modus Operandi is to muddle through and survive.

The two mentioned have the potential to have a decent career in the top league IMO.
