Why do the home countries struggle to succeed?

The obvious answer to the OP is that their populations are tiny, and often the real top talent in a generation goes off to play for England (see Rice & Grealish) Ireland have a decent generation coming through for the first time since the 90s - certainly they won't win anything, but I'm hoping they qualify for a couple of big tournaments. Wales have had a bloody decent 10 years to be fair to them.

I believe some of the criticism is justified. Ireland have lost badly to some incredible teams. Kenny did a De Boer, worse I think, but he's been stuck with. In fairness to him, he promised youth and has delivered in that respect. Starting to win fans back around. Results wise - awful.

Yeah, the squad has been garbage for years now though - always feels a bit pointless to criticise when the squad is just sh*te. It's been a Championship team, if that, for the last 10+ years. Quality is gradually improving, and it should look more like a bottom half Prem side in the next few years.

I always considered the reason England, in particular, never had sustained success at Global sports is that we have a 'jack-of-all-trades, Master-of-none' attitude to sport. Other countries, especially the smaller ones, seem to specialise in a single sport more. Holland, Germany, Brazil, argentina - all primarily footballing nations Wales, Ireland, Scotland, New Zealand - all primarily rugby nations WIndies, India, pakistan, - all primarily cricket nations England seem to want to compete at The highest level across Football, Rugby and Cricket, and a host of all other sports, spreading the talent pool for each thin. Only a few countries have managed to get Sustained success across multiple sports - Australia and South Africa both at Cricket and Rugby the obvious examples. I'd say, however, across these 3 'main' global sports, England has had the most success, occasionally topping the world at each - albeit briefly.

There will never be the like again - rightly or wrongly.
