I imagine it’s because we are signing them on a free transfer and can’t announce it until their current deal expires.

personally I quite like to switch off over the summer rather than get infuriated over things that either will or will not happen. The summer is slow for football news, so why try to will it along at a pace it will never go at?

No that's not the case. For UK free transfers you can't announce them until after the season has ended, however, you don't have to wait until 1/7. As an example Spurs announced Fraser Foster a few weeks ago on a 'free' from Southampton.

To save a month's wage some clubs, usually in the lower leagues, wait until 1/8 to sign players as an out of contract player gets 1 extra month pay from his former club if a new contract has not been signed. Does mean the player can't have a full pre season though.

I stand corrected, foster has held up the spurs shirt but is still listed as a Southampton player with an upcoming transfer to spurs.
