I remember flying to the US not long after 9/11. I was on one of those massive Airbuses with only a few people. There were obvious Air Marshalls with barely concealed weapons.
When asked what food I would like, I was a bit shocked, I think I had Burger and Chips, my missus had Lasagne - could have had basically anything. The plane was empty but the galleys were full. Unlimited drink too. Best time to fly ever but obviously not for a good reason.

Even in bygone says when food was served and never had to be purchased, the culinary offerings whilst edible were never of the greatest quality and I suspect wastage was rife.

I am informed that 'Turkish Airlines' have a chef on board who dons one of those long white chef's hats.I might be wrong but my understanding is that it is called a 'Toque'. I have never travelled with this carrier.

I have sampled the offerings on cruises and thankfully there was a dress-code for dinner.

Returning to the subject of food purchased aboard aircraft, when BA first introduced this policy in 'Economy' one could only purchase using a credit card whereas other carriers accepted cash payments.
Some learned chap who travelled with TUI recently mentioned that they do not accept cash, and he used his credit card to purchase food and beverages.

My goodness !

Concorde was actually quite a narrow aircraft and noisy in the cabin at that.

I flew Singapore Airlines once, long haul. Most of the flight was at night, so most passengers slept under the blankets provided and the cabin lights turned out, mostly.
I called the steward by the button on my chair. He came over by tippy-toe (so not to wake people) and asked what i wanted. I wanted alcohol and snacks. He asked whether I was likely to stay awake for the flight and want anything else ? and keep pressing the f-cking button.

Oooh, yes.

Off he tippy-toed and was back a couple of minutes later with a large-ish basket filled with wine/G&T cans/beer/snacks.
Cheers mate. I won't be pressing the button again.

On the Singapore flights, the meals were good. Lots of fresh fruit and good-looking meals
