I’m not saying you are wrong as as you say it is from your experience but me personally grew up in a stable household til my parents split up when I was 14 ( but it was amicable and I saw my dad any time I wanted) and so I don’t think it played any part in me having any “problems”.

That's not what I said. I know quite a few young adults and children with mental health issues where the father has pushed off knowing that the child has issues and not the other way round.

Good luck with your assessment as a positive assessment may be of help to you

Thank you.

I know you didn't mean anything bad by it and as I wrote, you were only speaking from your experience. I wasn't really a naughty child so didn't really cause many problems for parents.

Adhd is the result of crap parenting.

Well, there might be some truth in that, but I can assure you that you can have three children, and they will all have completely different personalties which might include less than desirable characteristics.

Nurture will always play a role, but nature creates the mould.

I wouldn't completely dismiss ADHD but it seems to be overly diagnosed.

My son went through a troublesome stage when he was between 8 and 10 - rather lively and likely to fly off the handle quickly. My then wife insisted we have him seen by a child psychologist and then a paediatric psychiatrist. He was, not surprisingly, diagnosed as having ADHD (and dyslexia) and a course of Ritalin was suggested to suppress his "buoyant" behaviour.

I was not happy about him being put on medication and persuaded my wife that we should not go along with this. I am very glad we didn't as his behaviour improved without recourse to any drugs , and by the time he went to secondary school he had largely got over the tantrums.

The psychiatrist had warned us that if he was troublesome at the age of 10 we should prepare for a stormy ride in his teenage years. Twaddle. He became a very decent, well-balanced and amiable adolescent, and as he passed through his teenage years matured into a considerate and very pleasant young man.

I think there is some truth to that but if ADHD was just about having crap parents then every child with crap parents would have it. You do get good parents and just normal parents whose children have ADHD.

As a teacher I saw parents who cared about their child barely holding back tears. I think both situations can be true. A child can genuinely have the condition without bad parenting and it's also true that bad parenting will make the condition worse.

I'd say that crap parenting just worsens something that's already there.

I agree that ADHD, and in fact many conditions, can be over diagnosed. That doesn't mean I'm saying that they aren't present, just that today's attitudes towards them are overly feminised. Modern teaching, in some sections, can be like an estrogen farm where essentially boisterous boys who don't behave like prefect girls are sometimes deemed to have something wrong with them. A good teacher recognises and understands sex differences and how to deal with them.....but you won't get that reality taught while taking a teaching qualification.

All children need a level of discipline, but it's just biology that a higher percent of boys will have periods when they need more discipline and focus than a typical girl just to keep them on track.

But like you imply, bad parenting will contribute towards ruining lives regardless of the sex.

That just about sums it up.

You will have maybe up to a third of a class with some kind of diagnosis - so it's a massive issue. ADHD/ Autism/ Anxiety are the current ones I see regularly (my missus is a special needs educator). I've basically ranted that it's mostly bollox. She agrees to a large extent. However, there are obviously real cases too. I remember a kid at school get a constant beating in my day but there was obviously something wrong with him.
Kids need more structure, is my belief, rather than supposed freedoms. All the freedom is doing is confusing them. Don't get me started on the gender/sexuality stuff but a similar situation.

I know, it's scary.

It's literally child abuse.
