I remember how excited the crowd were in the he Sheffield Utd game when everyone saw how big and good he was. If he hadn't have got injured he and Don Rogers would have been a real handful, one big, one fast but both skilful and with an eye for goal.
Older Celtic fans still talk about a match on a frozen pitch when he played in bumper boots and was unstoppable.
He ran a pub after retirement.

He also managed my home town team Stranraer

Brilliant seeing that Sheff UTD game i was there as a 9 year old in the New Stand terrace section at the bottom, remember that 25 yard shot goal vividly.

Great player for his time at Palace. RIP

Against Sheff Utd he kept running down the wing and every time he got fouled . In the end he got so annoyed , whoever had the ball you could clearly he him shout " gennie that ball " he put it down for the free kick which no keeper in the world would have saved and nearly burst the net . The joy on his face was something to behold .

Thanks for the memories and RIP Mr Hughes

RIP John Hughes. Great Player for Palace. Our very own Jonah Lomu really.
Needed a rugby tackle to stop him. Great goal against SUFC in all that mud!

Interesting, I always keep an eye out for their results. My adopted Scottish team. Always crap despite a bit of a surge a few years ago. What was it - a draw with Rangers?

Great entertainer the whole crowd would get on their feet when he went of on one of his iconic charges down the wing which inevitably used to end with a bullet of a shot.COYP

He was a tank. With a head of steam running down the wing, he didn't go around defenders so much as through them. And he had a shot on him too, like a howitzer. Reading this got me nostalgic and among other things, a bit of reading led me to realise that the Newcastle away game next month is the 53rd anniversary of my first Palace match. From Bert Head to Patrick Vieira, what a ride it's been.
