I can't remember the last time we started the season prepared. Why on earth were we heading down under when we needed the squad to be together ready for tonight?
With Liverpool and Man City away in the coming weeks we will most likely be bottom 3 by September.
Hopefully we will be ready after this to get our season up and running.

Its the way we play that is the issue and players like Wilf who have no football intelligence.

Hes loses the ball over 90% of the time this is unacceptable.

We have players that should be counter attacking quickly but we don't they dwindle on the ball so the opposition gets all players back then its wasted.

This is why strikers look useless you need service.

We need balls going intot he ball quickly and also need players that can put them in Wilf and Ayew wont do that.

This line up was strange to begin with Schlupp is useless in this role why is PV not learning I find he is a good player coming on later in game.

Hughes should be playing and it was the wrong game to start the new guy.

Palace had an awful preseason which didn't help manager needs to put his foot down stop SP doing these pre seasons for $.

I watched the match on tv and have just come back to this thread. I find it really hard to understand the vitriolic negativity of many of the posts. I do agree we were woefully unprepared and the first twenty minutes we were diabolical. After that we got into the game and played really well at times, especially in terms of controlling the ball and making space.

We created two outstanding chances, and on another day one of those would have gone in. Other than the unfortunate own goal Arsenal barely threatened after their goal.

Doucoure is clearly an upgrade on Kouyate, I don't agree with the criticism of Ayew who I thought played well. Wilf was disappointing.

Clearly we all see the same game and all have different views.

I'm not disheartened by that performance.
We were the better team in the second half and at the end of the first half.
We didn't take our chances and the final ball wasn't good enough and we need to improve in these areas.
If anything their keeper had more saves to make.

Tbh we were better than I expected we'd be after the disjointed pre season. Olise coming back will help plus I'm sure there'll be one or two more arrivals.

The opening fixtures are pretty unforgiving but I'm sure we will continue to develop through the season. Shame we couldn't finish off one of our decent chances this eve but it just wasn't to be.

We were unlucky not to get a draw from that performance. The first game of the season is always unpredictable but we played well against Arsenal. The new plays look good and seem to have hit the ground running. Our finishing was not great but that’s been true for a long time. I am hopeful that Benteke leaving might mean Dougie has a replacement in his sights. COYP!

On a positive note. Andersons passing was unbelievable tonight.

100% agree, decent performance all things considered, we will improve. The new lad looked decent in his brief cameo, these games won’t define our season.

With their new signings and positive preseason Arsenal were always going to b3 favourites to take the points. The issue would be how would we perform and for the first half an hour they gave us no room to play. However for the rest of the game we gradually grew in stature and confidence and put Arsenal under pressure. We had too golden opportunities and failed to take them. They are a better quality team than we are so no surprises we lost but plenty to be pleased about.COYP

Wasn't amazing but wasn't a bad performance.

Arenal started well, and Jesus was playing like Messi.

But we settled into things, and controlled most of the game.

Surprised to see OE starting, and still don't understand why Pat prefers Jeff over Hughes.

We were really disappointing tonight. Too slow out the blocks and very poor goals to concede.

Anderson did well, Guaita didn’t have much to do in all honesty, Luka looked ok for me when on as did Hughes. Mateta looked a far more obvious choice than Edouard, Schlupp for me is still an impact sub or utility option and shouldn’t be starting, hard to criticise Ayew too harshly but shouldn’t be a starting player.

Eze anonymous, Mitchell and Clyne middling, Wilf left a lot to be desired and disappointing to see two of our (is it?) five summer signings now out.

Not the start you’d hope for by a long chalk. Poor use of subs again in my opinion not that there’s any presumption it’s worth much!

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

I was there and thought eze had a decent game. His touch is good and when he paired with wilf down the left it looked ok. Arsenal we’re passing quicker and that was really the difference. More conviction in our ability would put us in a stronger position on the pitch.

I disagree with some of the posters - I thought Ayew and Zaha played well, especially in the second half.

Mitchell was not quite up to speed and Guita looked a bit nervous early on, but overall the side played with a lot of character.

Entertaining match.
