If that head butt had occured in the local night club or pub, there would have been all sorts of reaction along the lines of the culprit being arrested and charged etc etc,why is it then acceptable to deal with this offence by internal discipline when it is clearly an offence that should be dealt with by the police, what kind of example does it give to population if there is one rule for footballers and everyone else is treated differently,it is about time this was dealt with by criminal prosecution route!!

If plod think it merits outside intervention then it will happen I’m sure. Duncan Ferguson went down for an on field offence I think. Now with the abuse on insta etc it could roll into a criminal investigation. He’s out today giving all the apologies so that tells me a brief has been involved at some point.

The last thing we need is outside intervention in sporting arena . Football is an adrenalin fueled sport that controls itself and should stay that way .
We all accept that as do the players we dont need plod getting involved

Anyone who relates missconduct in sport to violence in nightclubs needs to have a word with themselves

And we still need a striker

Agree.

There have been numerous punches thrown in Rubgy etc. and I am wondering if they have ever been investigated by law enforcement? Not to my knowledge?

Equally, very easy for me to say this, but if a player nutted me like that on the pitch I'd reserve all right to try and break is jaw and argue my case that it was 'self defence' and merits if not the same punishment as said player then less.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

IMO It's views like this that keep us in the dark ages. Nutting someone is never an in-house problem. It is assault and should be treated as such or will never be eradicated.

There would be much case law in your favour, whereby someone who has been assaulted has justifiably thumped the assailant on the grounds that they expected the assault to continue. It's even been established that you can thump someone if you believe they are about to assault you.

The severity of the headbutt was not that high, so I think it is more stupidity than an actual attempt to cause harm, but I think if football is serious about communicating the message that there is no room for violence then they should extend the ban to say 5 games otherwise it is putting it on the level of a bad tackle, etc.

My dear chap if you can't see the correlation between the two acts of violence, that is precisely why we have that type of violence in society today !!

we have headbutts in society because occasionally a footballer does it? I think we have headbutts in society because it's often the shortest route to physical attack when people are in close proximity in a heated exchange.

Up the ban/punishment yes, but getting the police involved is ridiculous. Might as well make the sport non-contact or kill it off altogether and be done with it.

We nearly did that under Roy

On a tangent, the hair pull in the Chelsea game was IMHO a borderline red but at least a yellow

I know of a case where the son of someone I knew in Hong Kong was jailed for an attack on the rugby field in the UK. Many cases in UK of rugby players jailed for attacks on opponents
