Ian Hunter in his book Diary of a Rock 'n' Roll Star wrote about being on tour in America in the early 70's and the extreme difficulty the members of Mott the Hoople had in finding out Hereford's results.

I see that Hereford's FA Cup, first round, home tie against Portsmouth is on BBC 2 tonight. Kick off at 7.45.

Should be worth a squint.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Yes. Should hopefully be a good game although don't think that the Hereford players will have the quality to get close to Portsmouth. Atmosphere should be good although due to health and safety reasons with the condition of the ground the capacity is now just 5000 despite it not having changed for 30 odd years and having around 13,000 in the same ground. Hopefully a cup run can create cash to invest in the ground. It's the last part of the area that needs doing as the area around it has been absolutely transformed for the better in the last decade

Just hoping that all is as friendly as possible. For a small city club Hereford has had quite a reputation over the years including since the reforming of the club. One of the old 'lads' from Hereford has opened up a designer wear shop in the city and recently with the cost of living crisis has opened up a second specialising in pre-owned items. Within less than 24 hours of the cup draw a less than friendly t-shirt had been designed produced and was on sale....it's reference to the drug culture of the 90s and the less than friendly message to tonight's visitors though is amusing I must admit just not inflammatory I hope.

The man who runs it is genuinely one of the nicest blokes you'd ever meet though. A man who is as passionate about Hereford as he is with his father's Napoli roots. He's also a really good friend of Bez of the Happy Mondays who randomly moved to Herefordshire some years ago and was recently married here. I shall bore you no longer. Hope it's a great game that Hereford win and then we can best the hammers this weekend. COYP

Supporting Harriers that was the kind of welcome I remember.
