I think the reality of having the world watching their every move has had a big impact on Qatar. All the joy and excitement of the royals and high end elites when that envelope opened and their country came out has probably waned somewhat. From an insular do what we want to whom we want environment it has now become the next big brother. The ban of beer in stadiums at the last minute is probably the start of what will turn into the crappiest ‘fan experience’ at any football tournament.
FIFA now defending qatar tells me that the skeletons are rattling over how They ever got the vote in the first place. I mean infantino telling other countries to get their house in order before condemning gays being killed, women being stoned to death, loss of limbs as punishment etc is a bit rich.

Whereas in British football it's completely acceptable.

I wasn't referring to homosexuality in British football.

My point was that homosexuality in Qatar is illegal, and whether we like it or not, we have no right to impose our western values and beliefs on a sovereign middle eastern country.

I've just heard on the telly that the England team will take the knee before their game against Iran tomorrow. Yet another pathetic and pointless display of virtue signalling.

I know. My response was sarcasm. I was agreeing with you. Male British footballers pretending to support gay people when not one of them would ever dare to 'come out' because homosexuality is taboo in the British professional game.

How brave Harry was leading his team to take the knee in a pointless gesture. After feeble giving in and taking his silly armband off, as if anybody cares.

All this condemnation of the Qatari regime seems to becoming from people who are there and being paid handsomely to be so. The haven’t the intelligence to realise, how pathetic they are. If they held these strong views, they wouldn’t have jumped on the plane to fill their pockets with cash, but refused to go.

Totally agree. From taking the knee to Alex Scott wearing the One Love armband, it's all pointless and actually makes me cringe. All that pathetic posturing makes no difference to how the government of Qatar do things.

As you said, if they thought that strongly about it they should have boycotted the tournament, but the lure of piles of dosh was too hard to resist.

One the definitions of Blatter in Webster's is "to make a senseless noise". Nominative determinism?

The only thing he makes sense to is his bank account.

The lack of drinking water thing is reported on the BBC Sports app - from my own experience out there I would suggest that this is extremely unusual & has probably arisen because its at the very start of the tournament & people have started arriving where certain basics are still being arranged -

The report reads that you have to have a wristband (which means that you have checked in or registered) to be able to have access to certain items & they are not going to be available until after 18.30 hours -

These fan villages are being newly constructed so there will have been no opportunity for them to have been used before & any hiccups ironed out - they are in effect learning on the job -

I would imagine that "paid for" bottled drinking water will arrive fairly quickly once it becomes common knowledge that it hasn't yet been made available - whether that develops into free cold drinking water fountains available to everyone in the fan village is another matter & probably will rely on how much media attention it receives -

This is the World Cup in Qatar not Selhurst.
