Can the team accommodate all of Zaha, Eze, Olise and Eze in the same starting line-up?
They are all players who like to run with the ball and tend to take an extra unnecessary touch or two.
When we have lost recently Vieira has bemoaned the fact that we have moved the ball too slowly, but in my view this is partly attributable to the fact that the players want that extra touch and don’t play enough first time passes.
This means we are too easily crowded out, the opposition has time to regroup or moves fizzle out.
We look unbalanced and I’m not sure that just stiffening up the midfield, as others have suggested, will fix this tendency to over elaborate from our more attacking players.
Even an accomplished team such as Man City rarely (if at all) start matches with Grealish, Mahrez, Foden and Bernardo Silva all in the same team.
These again are all players who like to run with the ball so Pep rotates them and balances them off with Rodri, Gundogan and De Bruyne who are adept at playing the ball early.
Obviously we don’t have such luxury of choice, but the principles of moving the ball quickly and purposefully remain even at our less hallowed levels.

Shouldn’t be two references to Eze above.
I meant Ayew, Zaha, Olise and Eze as players who like to run with the ball.

Yes, as long as Ayew plays CF, if not no, Ayew should be a bench player great at winning free kicks with 20 mins to go if you are leading, the team set up is obvious, play players in their correct positions

Tickled Pink used the word lightweight in the match thread. I think it describes accurately three of the four. When the opposition press and get physical, two are nowhere to be seen, and one waves his arms about and has a strop. Ayew to his credit can take a knock and dish it back.
We're lightweight and unbalanced, and no team can function with just one genuine midfielder.

Agreed, when we had Zaha, Bolasie and Moritz/Punch we had Jedinak and KD in front of the defence

I think if we turned the clock back on Luka to 2018 when he was at his peak for us, then he could partner Doucoure.
He had an extra yard of pace there and played well with confidence.

That being said, an upgrade on Luka then with more forward passing is obviously the ideal. If Schluppy is in the game we generally play well. Odd to say, but I do feel a game can turn on how well Jeff plays. He's aggressive as we saw yesterday, but couldn't deal with Forest's passing.

Decent player Jeff, but ideally bench option to inject pace if we're chasing or to put out wide for one of Olise or Eze if we're defending a lead.

I ain't got nuthin' funny to say. Sorry.

Indeed ridiculous. One has to wonder what PV was aiming to achieve. Actually, disrespectful of the opposition, but they had the last laugh. Let's see if PV has learned anything from it.

Schlupp instead of Luka. Ayew nowhere near it.

We don't have a Central midfield so obviously unbalanced. Hughes must be terrible in training as he literally never plays - with people shoe horned in front of him. He may as well go in January.

That would be my team Lanzo although I still don’t know what is wrong with Hughes. As I mentioned on another thread, if he ain’t that good then why the hell did we buy him?

I’m still not sure that Edouard up front alone with Olise, Eze and Zaha behind in a supporting 3 gets us over my original point about too many players wanting too many touches and running with the ball at the expense of moving the ball with speed and purpose. You can have too many dribblers which affects the balance and efficiency of the team.
It looks good on paper and may well work in some games but I’m unconvinced it’s sustainable over a long hard season.
Another poster mentioned when we played with KG and Jedi holding which enabled Zaha, Murray and Bolassie to flourish and this is correct.
However, I would contend that none of Olise, Zaha, Edouard or Eze have the physicality and robust approach of a Murray or Bolassie which means there is always the risk of them being outmuscled - as we have witnessed this season.
Olise looks a huge talent with great potential , but I don’t think he’s played particularly well this season or looked as much of a threat as he did last season.
Eze looks another real talent but tends to play in fits and starts.
We may just have to get used to inconsistency in their performances until they gain more experience.
