There was some really dodgy decisions by the ref in the England game, but ultimately we fell short. Not by a wide margin though; all in all I think we can be proud of our performance and the team. It often comes down to fine margins and there's of course disappointment for all bar one team every four years. To my mind we were still one of the best teams in the tournament and if we'd have won against France then who knows. I'll be cheering on the underdogs in the semis, it's been such an open World Cup and an enjoyable one at that, so I'll not let our exit sour that.

'Southgate out' has become a bit of a cliche for a while now and if we'd won last night instead of lost - which I struggle to blame Southgate for - no-one would've been calling for him to go at this tournament. Not everything can be fixed by replacing the manager, and the England team in my view are more than decent anyway and his reassuring management style more effective than many managers past. We need to build on where we are rather than search for negatives.

Positive play and it could've very easily have been a different result.

I think it's easy to get caught up on Southgates quiet manner, but he's a reassuring presence for the team in a way that hasn't been true of many England managers past. He has the squads respect and a positive outlook. I'd have loved for us to do better here, but to my mind neither he nor the team has let us down.

In a day or two decisions will be analysed. For instance, Giroud comes on, no one marks him - an obvious aerial threat - he scores. What was all the time wasting in injury time? Why start every game so poorly?

Apropos the goal he scored, he was being marked by Maguire but managed to get his head to the ball delivered with some aplomb by Griezmann. Edited by Willo (11 Dec 2022 11.26am)

I think that Southgate benefitted from taking charge of England at a very low point. Low expectations etc. He did a good job reversing the trend and had the good fortune of a great new generation of young talent coming through. He does and says exactly what the FA wants to see and hear. However, I think at best, he has plateaued. We regularly beat the lesser teams but rarely any quality teams. As one offs you could blame the players but not when it is a habit. I certainly wouldn’t want him as Palace manger and doubt any top 8 premier league team would take him. So, I think it is time to say “Gareth, thanks for what you’ve done but we need a new mindset to lead the team”. A bit like the end of Roy’s time at Palace.
