No, there is no shame, if it wasn't so predictable. Soutgate has taken our National side, from a point of embarrassment to something approaching respectability, and that has to be applauded, but he's now failed 3 times in almost identical circumstances - not sure he knows how to make the next step.

It's been a good Tournament overall, some great games, some giant killing, and some big team Failures.
Of the 4 teams in the Semis I, for one, am glad that it's France vs Argies that made it. as A neutral, I certainly didn't want uber dull Croatia, or gutsy Morocco in the final. Argentina vs France has the opportunity to be the most entertaining game, so I shall be watching. the only problem is that I don't really want France to win, but I REALLY don't want Argentina to win.

1994 Ireland beat Italy in the early rounds. The Italians went on to the final. If i recall correctly.

It’s predictable when we lose to Liverpool, but I don’t really see what that proves other than the fact there are better teams than us that exist - it’s the same at international level. Similarly, if we view this through the lense that anything other than winning the tournament is ‘failure’, then it’s just setting up for exactly that - no one thinks like that when it comes to their club team so I’ve no idea why it’s supposed to apply internationally. We fail to win the FA cup every year, that doesn’t mean we have a problem with our manager. I actually think your broader point re Southgate is fair and questions around whether he gets another go I think are reasonable, but I don’t view losing narrowly to the world champions as anything to get too hyperbolic about.

But that team are not current world champions , they are a poor immitation of the French side of 4 years ago .

Both are good teams, with good players, and expectations and Rights to win the champs league - (even though one of them has never won it) Palace have no right beating Liverpool (which makes is so much sweeter when it happens!) but England, with this team and resources should be challenging - and more importantly - occasionally beating the likes of France. I can take one narrow defeat against the world champions if it's in isolation or on occasion we come out victorious, but for it to happen quite so often with unerring regularity against so called 'superior' opposition is where it becomes so galling. Hindsight shows this was a winnable game. A large portion of the football media and fanbase alike suggest we were the better team. Same old, same old. There's only so many times I can justify the excuse of 'you need luck to win' or 'it just didn't go for us'. I cannot recall a time we caused an 'upset'. I can recall plenty of times we Lost when we shouldn't have. We are Serial Underachievers - Bottlers even. English Entitlement? maybe, but it's only because we've been so close so many times. Both are good teams, with good players, and expectations and Rights to win the champs league - (even though one of them has never won it)

if there was ever a fella who deserves a World cup winner medal, its Messi Certainly in the top 5 of all time, and maybe even the GOAT also i feel sorry for the little fella, playing with that undisciplined rabble in Paris.......Not winning the CL and also playing away from the Prem and its dazzling level of competitiveness. I don't think we are "entitled" I think we are being realistic. Only a handful of countries have a realistic chance of winning the major competitions on a regular basis. You have to have the population, the money, the facilities and a large number of professional players to pick from. England ticks all those boxes so we have under achieved, that is not arrogance just facts. One more point

I don't think we are "entitled" I think we are being realistic.

Only a handful of countries have a realistic chance of winning the major competitions on a regular basis. You have to have the population, the money, the facilities and a large number of professional players to pick from.

England ticks all those boxes so we have under achieved, that is not arrogance just facts.

Are you serious? There are clubs in the Premier League who have unloaded a manager for (his team) failing to win ONE trophy in ONE season. Man Utd fired Van Gaal in 2016 because he only managed to win the FA Cup and nothing else.
