Now, this may paint me as a right 'villain' in our oft' nonsensical world however the following is an example of 'stories' that really have got my goat of late: [Link]

I would like to think that I subscribe to a mantra of 'helping the worst off/those that need it' and believe it is indeed a barometer for assessment of any society. Within this bracket, I would consider the likes of the mentally/physically handicapped or ill, the elderly, any child who needs help, or even those who through unfortunate circumstances or no fault of their own either need support or even just a helping hand. This is not a definitive list, it must be noted, as there are probably numerous other individuals I believe would fall into the category of 'deserving of societal help'.

However, when I see a 30 year old, single mother of five in the news complaining about struggling financially, I am left confused as to why I get the impression that this is supposed to elicit sympathy from me? Quite frankly I don't give a f**k. I feel for those kids but if the situation is so dire perhaps they should be taken out of it and the aforementioned individual punished? IMO they should not be given a platform which, (and I would like to suggest should be intended to expose their human incompetence or ridicule them) is then used as some sort of appeal for charity to help them.

It's nothing against any such 'official' charity, unless the cause/motive is nefarious in any way I consider all charitable work worthy of admiration and support, but surely this individual should be derided and scalded by society?

Some people justifiably need help, some people may fall or struggle and need a helping hand up, some find themselves, through unfortunate circumstances, in need of help but those who quite intentionally architect a position to be reliant upon others should surely be chastised for this?

Maybe I am just a massive c u next Tuesday but I do find it bewildering if not maddening! Again, this may just be the grumblings/ramblings of a now somewhat isolated (WFH so 08-1700 alone) bloke but there seems to be a culture these days of martyring and validating those who want to outsource their personal responsibility to others.

This covers something that I have a bee in my bonnet about.

Never in these many similar articles do you ever hear of any financial contribution being made by the children's father(s). When I was younger an absent father used to contribute to the upkeep of his children but it seems that over the years this has changed and it's now the role of the state to take over the financial role of the father.

Why?

I am broadly in agreement with your overall sentiment. But I think you've misrepresented this particular woman, in that nowhere in that piece does she complain or ask for charity (as you suggest in your third paragraph). She has just set out the facts of her life, specifically at Christmas, and my heart went out to her.

I'd put it less eloquently. To me, the welfare state should be a safety net for those unable to provide for themselves. It shouldn't be there to support a chosen lifestyle, nor indeed as a lifestyle choice in itself. Unfortunately that bird has long since flown. Now every day on the "news" you see single parents complaining about their lot.

She’s clearly a slag with no concept of responsibility. Open legs, squirt and more family allowance . Personally I don’t give a feck about her. The kids yes but She needs sterilisation sooner rather than later. c*** like a bucket and an amoeba has more sense than the dog.

TBF I do understand that statement JRW and am inclined to agree however my beef was almost equally, if not more so, with the manner/intent of the reporting on this as opposed to the individual directly, if that makes sense? Hence why I said "Is this supposed to elicit sympathy from me?" I think I am honest in saying that was more of a gripe for me but equally, you may question why she was so keen to participate in it? It references charities numerous times and having myself previously volunteered for a Woman's shelter there were often individuals I'd encounter, sometimes with children, in awful conditions, which they found themselves in for reasons outside of their control (death of father, job loss, abusive relationships etc). That was heartbreaking.

Regarding Fathers I do agree however that is a separate matter/discussion. In this instance I would like to know if these kids have a father (singular) or fathers (plural). In which case I would again paint her as the 'architect' of the whole situation especially if the latter.

Personally, I have no sympathy for her as an individual with again, the father(s) and the children separate matters.

Quite correct & there needs to be a radical rethink about benefits. The people I genuinely feel sorry for are the heroes who get up at 5am wipe the sleep from their eyes & then travel an hour in monsoon rain or bitter cold to do a job they loathe for a Boss they hate.
I'm not sure if it would be either workable or even practical or even fair (but what is?) but the long term unemployed should be given the opportunity that if they go back to full employment they pay no tax for say 12 Months at least giving them an incentive to get back in the workforce.

Have to hope that similar interviewees, are not just treated with respect (not questioned by the interview organisers) but are told what they could do to improve their futures.

Obese people using food banks is somewhat ironic.

Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance.

People who only seem to have the capacity for breeding and nothing else, should be sterilised. Then at least she would be able to provide income from her speciality in order to feed her kids without further burdening society.

I struggle a bit with why people are so down on a lady like this? Having 5 kids under the age of 30 is what a woman is biologically designed to do. The real freak, historically, is the woman of 30 who has no kids and lives on her own. That is the biggest danger to our society.

If she was married, and her husband could support them, then this lady would be celebrated. She is actually living the life she was designed for. And even if the collective had to help out in terms of subsidising the housing along with other assistance then if these 5 kids are bought up correctly, it's actually a blessing to everybody.

I suspect having 5 kids under the age of 30 is not uncommon in the Amish and is celebrated.

I get the ire aimed at how our welfare state has turned out. But women's fertility is what it is and we live in a West in which far to many women at the age of 30 have NO children. Far more of a long-term danger to all of us.

LOL when ever the BBC does a report about some woman who can't afford to eat and has to go to a food bank they are often fat. Which begs the question why reporters never ask "you don't appear to be starving"
