The old Brazil, so much better than the current one. So much more sporting than the current world cup holders, who lack any class whatsoever. All of us had Pele as the best in his time, there was little argument. Always seemed a decent enough guy RIP

I was privileged to see him play in a friendly match against Fulham about 1972 when his club Santos visited London. A magnificent player and gentlemen RIP the legend.

I went to see Chelsea play the New York Cosmos in the mid 70s. It was a unique experience to witness Pele, George Best, Bobby Moore and Franz Beckenbauer on the pitch at the same time.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

It's funny you say about the 'old Brazil'.. I drink in a proper old school social club in Banstead.. I've been brought up in there more or less by my old man.. Always remember a guy who drank in there years back (He died about 6 years ago)
He was a total alcoholic bless him and it was sad as he was a very gifted football player back in the 70s who played for Sutton United, so didn't do to bad but the demon drink got hold of him..
Anyway I digress.. I always remember he used to wear a Brazil shirt and supported Brazil in any major tournament.. I asked him why once and he said ' Because in the 70s Brazil played football how it should be played.. They played it beautifully and Pele was the epitome of how football should always be'...

Sorry a bit of a pointless story I know but it always stuck in my head so I thought now was the perfect time to tell it!!

Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!!

Apparently Pele's mum is still alive. She's 100 and didn't want him to be a footballer after his dad injured his knee playing and was unable to work.

I saw him play in the late 70's in New York.
Being young and stupid I didn't pay a lot of attention - I was so in awe of the Giants stadium and the facilities that I just do not remember the football.
The best player on the planet ever in my opinion and unlike Maradonna and his ilk he was a gentleman and lived a good and clean life.
top man!

No problem accepting Pele as the best ever but players at that level are on a different planet anyway. Pele or Maradona, Messi or Ronaldo, Matthews or Finney - who can say?
Rogers or Taylor? Obviously The Don but others might disagree.

I also vaguely remember the 1970 World Cup as a 6 year old. I clearly remember that I had two small posters in my bedroom wall. Pele and Bobby Moore. They were the centre of the football universe to a small kid.
He epitomised to me the good in football.
He also must have been one of the most fouled players in history.

What made Pele such a wonderful footballer was the era in which he played. His majestic control of the ball, dribbling skills and powerful shooting, with either foot, is even more remarkable when you consider the heavy ball and state of those playing surfaces. Not to mention the heavy tackling that went unpunished.

Like most of I suspect, I've been scouring YouTube to watch clips of his play and it really was awesome stuff. And, like our John Jackson, a humble gentleman too.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Pele said he didn't have many regrets but his biggest regret is that he never played at Wembley.
