I agree with you completely. Mitchell is faster than Ward and after that Ward is a much better player. The amount of times TM gives the ball away is shocking.I wouldn’t have him back in the side.

They're quite different players but Mitchell needs to get his mojo back somehow. I personally think he will come good but could do with a rest and to regain his place on merit. Ward doesn't actually offer as much going forward as Mitchell does, but currently I think we're more solid with full backs mainly defending. If we had another holding player/ deep lying midfield player then our full backs could probably get forward more. I may be wrong but have always thought Vieira wants our full backs to attack but it just doesn't suit us currently.

It was a good performance against a modest Bournemouth team having an off-day. Our back 4 were excellent, and despite others' reservations about him I thought Andersen was great and has been pretty much every time I have been to see Palace recently. Doucoure is essential, but I can't understand why PV won't play Hughes alongside him rather than Schlupp. We have real quality in Wilf / Eze / Olise, but personally I don't think much of Ayew (would prefer Hughes and Edouard for Schlupp and Ayew), and whilst I commend his effort, I think Mateta is miles from being a PL striker. Despite deserving the win, and the shot statistics, we created little, so I wouldn't get over-excited and feel we can deliver more with better balance in the team.

I agree that I'd like to see Hughes be given more playing time, and Schlupp less than he has received lately. I suspect that PV's reasoning is that Schlupp is more of a lightning-in-a-bottle scorer, where every so often he produces a wonder strike that can save a game or win one. We have seen him do this occasionally, but I'd bet that in training he does it "regularly."

By contrast, Hughes offers better defensive effort, passing, and predictability in midfield, but PV may regard this as not enough upside to help us win matches. It might make all of us more comfortable, but the analytics – and those strikes in training – may tip the scales towards Schlupp.

Schlupp was also a favourite of Hodgson, always on the first team sheet. Between Hodgson and Vieira there's quite a difference in set up and personnel and yet Schlupp has remained a constant.
I'm not convinced he plays the role of central midfielder particularly well, but I can't argue against the two managers, they must have their reasons. It's all a bit of a mystery.

My one major concern this season is we haven't won a game where the opposition has been at it. Our wins against Wolves, West Ham, Leeds, Southampton and Bournemouth were games where the only reason we didn't win comfortably was our lack of end product. When teams show up and put pressure on us we seem to crumble. The inconsistency of the league has favoured us slightly, but we really need a midfield general in the games where we need more fight. Spuds are inconsistent, but Newcastle could really turn us over with the aggressive way they play. The one huge success has been Doucoure. If we had two of his ilk I genuinely think we could challenge the top 8 given how out of sorts some of the bigger teams are.

With regard to the Mitchell debate I have maintained that his lack of ability with his right foot is a major issue given how most teams play with inverted wingers these days. Whenever a player cuts inside he is usually done for. In contrast this favours Ward. However, Mitchell is very strong on his left foot and is fairly quick and I think he is good enough for us and when his confidence is up can look quite dangerous going forward, delivering some good whipped crosses.

After 2 poor performances, a win was most welcome albeit against comfortably the worst team I've seen this season.

Moving Ayew into the centre worked well and I was pleased to see him score from that unlikely header. All the players put in a decent shift, and had we added another couple of goals it wouldn't have flattered us.

But the long term positional issues are still there.

If it's to be loan signings this month, it would seem that our reported primary target, AWB, may not now be available. Having got this far into the season with the Clyne/Ward combo, I wouldn't be too concerned. Especially if we can sign the right kind of midfield player to play alongside Doucoure. There is speculation that Gallagher may become available and I would be happy with that. He would be able to hit the ground running.

In terms of Schlupp and Mitchell, Schlupp doesn't look comfortable in the middle but he does bring strength and energy and that seems to get him the nod over the more cultured approach of Will Hughes. Mitchell hasn't been the same since he got a series of niggling injuries. He's young enough to recapture his past form, but he also needs real competition for his place whether that's a signing or a younger player from the U21's.

I would be delighted if we could get CG back on loan. Chelsea seem to be throwing money at more overpriced midfielders so he may be surplus to their requirements.
However I would prefer a hard as nails enforcer in there that has the legs to get around the pitch. Luka of a few years ago or a Jedi in his pomp would do nicely.
