I'm not seeing any departure from the strategy the club have had over the last decade when it comes to the transfer market. An occasional splash followed by a couple of years just making do. It's becoming increasingly difficult to operate in that way in the Premier League.

Our 'Net Spend' over seasons 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 was about £110 Mill, over the next 3 seasons, with Wan Bissaka being sold to Man Utd prior to the 2019-20 season, we received about £30 Mill more than we spent.

Long term strategy, well it should be break into the top 10, while slowly improving the team, before breaking into Europe and building a squad strong enough to compete in both competitions. After that we will then achieve champions league, palace vs juve under the lights at selhurst. Then we should be competing for both the pren and champions league before becoming the first team to do the quadruple while remaining unbeaten in the league. Unfortunately it's never going to happen, the top 10 is hard enough without a mega rich owner. This is as good as it gets for a club our size, enjoy it because its inevitable we will be relegated at some point in the future. If we can get a lucky fa cup or league cup while being half decent then ideal. We will lose more than we win. Enjoy the wins, let the loses ruin your weekend that's just how it is.

Unless the owners suddenly start splurging, it's the only way I can see us developing. Assuming either Eze, Olise or Guehi would be worth the most in our squad but if we could sell one for a big fee and use it to buy 3/4 more players to develop, that's probably how we grow.

It would appear that we may have been somewhat overlooked by our American shareholders. If no funds for players are forthcoming then you have to ask what is going on. Surely to protect their investment value they need to ensure we stay in the premier so an injection of funds to strengthen the squad would appear to be an absolute minimum requirement this month.

Agree w with all of that, well said. Viera not backed during the summer and we're looking to just make do until next summer it seems. As we're not in danger Parish wont spend, I too expect Viera to get fed up and leave. He could play Hughes though who's looked good of late in cameos. Originally posted by Canterbury Palace
What a mad thread. Last season we conceded our fewest ever Premier League goals, scored our second most ever and played a far better brand of football than under Roy who, at times, made hari-kari seem an attractive option. The simple fact is that we haven't backed Vieira anywhere near enough and we're being punished for it. I'd argue that we're overperforming actually. We responded to the long term injury of James McArthur and the departure of Gallagher by signing Doucoure who, although I love him, is nowhere near enough. There is no way Schlupp should be starting in our midfield after 10 years in the division. At least two additional players are required there. Then there is Ayew. Regardless of how hard he works, like Schlupp, he shouldn't be starting up front for us at this point. We haven't had a top class striker since Murray and he left 8 years ago. Two key chances in the first half came to Ayew last night. The first, when he was played through, he miscontrolled and lost the ball. The second he opted to shoot from a tight position, rather than playing a short ball to Olise who was clear and would have been favourite to score. If we'd converted either of those chances it could have been a different game. It is a disgrace that, with Mitchell injured, we have no left back cover and Joel Ward, who is a questionable choice at right back these days, has to fill in. I legitimately think we need a decent striker, two midfielders, a right back, a left back and cover in central defence. Plus their is the looming spectre of Zaha leaving for nothing who won't be cheap to replace. There's no way we're doing this business in January and I am skeptical we will in the summer either. Andersen, Guehi, Doucoure, Zaha, Eze and Olise is the core of an outstanding team but they need more support ASAP. Vieira is doing a good job with his hands tied, like most of our managers have to, and without serious investment over the next couple of windows, I imagine he'll bugger off before long. Ideal January? Gallagher back on loan and get Danny Ings who, although 30, is a year younger than Ayew and is a proven goalscorer in the Prem.

Evening all, I've written a similar thing before, but it strikes me the team will have better balance when / if Wilf leaves. I don't think we need to chop and change managers. Still like Pat. Cheers

Take the midfield last season: Kouyate McArthur Gallagher Replaced by: Doucoure Schlupp Eze I'm happy to say Kouyate and Doucoure cover similar ground. Gallagher and McArthur regularly covered >11km a game for us - they were our top two runners. That meant that the opposition midfield didn't have time on the ball, didn't pick decent passes going forward, so we conceded fewer goals. Not doing that hurts the most against the better teams - funnily enough our record against the top lot is a lot worse this season. The other thing it does is force mistakes higher up the pitch where we attacked and scored. Anyone else think that press that was so enjoyable last season and opposition centre backs hated has totally vanished? As of the world cup break, we had the lowest distance covered in the league. [Link] Most of the group directly above us are at the top of the league and dominate possession. Schlupp and Eze will be nowhere near CG and Jimmy Mac's numbers. The reason Ayew is in the team is probably so someone up top is doing something, because Zaha and Olise won't be covering much ground. Look at this tweet from last season - Ayew applies more pressures than any other player in the league - [Tweet Link] McTominay is high on that list of distance covered which is partly why I think we should go for him. The overall strategy might not be that wrong, but we are carrying way too many luxury players on the pitch who don't deliver consistently enough to justify the lack of work they put in. We either need to buy a couple of grafters, or an element of the Eze/Olise/Zaha/Schlupp group need to pull their finger out and start getting a sweat on.

Have to agree with you there. The transfer policy has been soo poor for so long that we got our self in a bit of a pickle. Old team, lots of injuries, no sell on value. The fact that we are almost certain to lose our best ever player on a free isn't great business. Whilst we could do with another hundred mill, it's clear that we don't have that. So we're going to need to incrementally improve the team. And that probably means taking good offers when they come. We've started to take some risks with younger players, but with that comes a lot of inconsistency. So Pat has a job on his hands to find the right blend of youth and experience. And Dougie is going to have to be shrewd in the market. Whilst a lot of players are crazily overpriced, there are still some deals and gambles to be had

I appreciate I have been a glumbucket and an 'Elijah of doom' about our prospects and accordingly villified. I suspect my sentiments below will fall into this category. To my mind where we are at present is the best we will be for the foreseeable future.Should we remain in the PL during this time, we will have to accept that we will be mid-table at best and probably much lower with relegation part of the debate amongst supporters. We will of course be hoping that some gems emerges from the academy but alas it is unlikely that there will be a steady stream of lads staking a first team place in the PL. This is of course hardly an upbeat assessment but I believe I am being realistic.I of course will be delighted if our 'Direction of travel' is at variance with my doom laden prognostication !
