I used to sit next to a really nice family in the Sainsbury end and whilst I loved to watch Hopkins, Houghton and Freedman zinging it around the bloke next to me couldnt stand them and preferred the honest grifter types.
We all see something different but for me whilst Hodgson performed a miracle on a shoe string, the football was dire.
A while back someone was lamenting Pulis, again the lowest possession stats in the division. 442 used to publish the top 15 passer combinations stats per game and we were lucky to get one! Why pay money to watch the other team with the ball. On the flip side there was the dreadful but successful pass till you fall asleep Spanish team, so its not all about possession, I admit.
This team has three of the most exciting players I've seen at Palace. It didnt happen against Newcastle but in the previous games we have been playing a really good to watch passing game with real zip and some end product. Yes we lost to Spurs and to Southampton but we had some really good passages.
This last seems to be our problem, converting good work in the first two thirds of the pitch to decent chances. Not chances where someone has to beat two men and cut a worldy into the corner. Hughes does seem the best answer we have and it is frustrating to not see him used but on the whole I think PV is on the right track and god forbid a return to something like Dyche ball.

Southampton v Luton or Grimsby. Winner into the FA Cup QF. Just saying.

I think it worth reviving this thread.

Have to say I thought Lanzo was somewhat hysterical earlier on this season and his strongly assertive and subjective posts are something I’ve come to expect if not accept however I think there is solid evidence to really start questioning PV’s employment here.

The line up yesterday seemed off immediately. The only mitigation for me was the thought ‘I won’t know as much as PV so perhaps there’s reasons I’m unaware of or cannot see’ however the performance was as dreadful as I feared.

One win in ten in all competitions, complete lack of goals from open play, lack of identity on the pitch, running less than everybody else and bizarre line ups. Yesterdays starting lineup had 5 goals between them all season. Last season was fantastic and really inspired hope for many I’d suggest however things are going from bad to worse at the moment with no clear indication towards a changing of direction.

There are several other considerations such as lack of transfer activity, injuries and current run in however my view of PV quietly and smugly turning us into a mid table side with European aspirations, playing a superior brand of football is quite quickly turning into one of a pretty clueless novice lacking tactical nouse and the ability to pick a team let alone motivate it.

Everton, Saints (twice now), Leeds, B’mouth, Villa, Wolves have all changed managers. I can only see us descending down the table further until we do the same and praying it’s not too late.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Your posts are good and well thought out IMO. What would you have done differently yesterday to PV ?
I didn't like the performance of the Arsenal kid much when he came on (obviously early days).
With regard to lack of identity my feeling is that a lot of this is down to the nature of the players we've recruited.
There's a lack of height, physicality and pace / gears in the squad (borne out by the running stats) and the players all seem to need twenty touches.

I certainly think there’s an argument for that.

With regards to what I would have done differently yesterday I can’t really comment beyond the starting XI not that I think I’d be a viable candidate for any upcoming PL managerial positions.

What I would like to see however is some, any fight from the players and an identity/tactics/style of play that looks as thought it’s geared towards us winning football matches. I think the most enthused I was at any point yesterday was when their goal was (wrongly) disallowed. We got a goal through sheer freak circumstance but beyond that struggled to envisage where it’s come from otherwise.

I actually quite liked ASL but that’s not a strong opinion tbh we hardly had the ball so beyond Ahamada nutmegging Mac Allister it was hard to draw too many conclusions from either.

I’d of started Ayew, Edouard, Olise up top and perhaps of had a new boy if not Ebs ahead of Hughes/Doucoure for what it’s worth but tbh I think the team needs to be trained, drilled, organised and motivated far beyond a starting XI on the day. Yesterday wasn’t just about team selection and performance on the day, for me it was the playing out of several things below par, missing or evidently wrong with this team atm and that responsibility lies with the manager.

The result was of course a massive reason for celebration however the performance was not worthy of optimism or praise and for anyone that was there I’d suggest would inspire nothing but fear for what lies ahead.

All fair comment but I think he looked at how well they've been playing and the injuries to Zaha, Anderson and Richards and decided to try to defend and hope that Mateta might stretch them.

I don't think it particularly worked as they created three or four good chances going straight through the middle of us but luckily McAllister was powder puff in front of goal.

I also saw little of encouragement and have felt that for a long time but more because of the squad assembled rather than the manager although my preference is more direct football than the continual sideways and backwards passing that has become our signature under PV.

My view on Pv, how we are playing now, is how I expected us to play under him.. this season is what I was expecting last year... last year I did not expect the first season we had... I bet PV didn't either...

We had a good last season but needs time to change the way we use to play and SP to put his hand in his pocket.

FFS, SP has net worth of 50m, so all he has to do is bankrupt himself for two decent players.

If we want a transfer kitty this summer, I suspect we'll have to sell Guehi.
