Hard to believe PV would sign a young centre midfielder from Arsenal without having some positive expectations either.

I've never understood this argument.

If a player comes on loan to us, and he proves to be terrible, then we have dodged a bullet. If the player comes to us and plays so well his value goes up, he probably gained us some points which is worth a lot of money. A single win at the end of the season could be worth 2/3 places higher in the league than without it...I believe each position is worth around £2m. So how is it that we gain nothing from having players who do well for us?

I suppose the real question is, do we wish we could go back and not loan players like Loftus Cheek and Gallagher...even if it meant we had worse seasons, if it meant we lost revenue and we didn't gain the positive press for being the club that got those lads their international debut for England.

You can't just go to a club like Arsenal and say I want your player, for free on loan, who cost you £15m, with a condition that if he works out to be as good as you thought, we can have him for a bargain price...Arsenal would probably say, ok, set fee of £25m...and we would have already priced ourselves out of a deal regardless how well he does.
