Whilst I do understand this point Syd, I can't help but think any return to the championship would spark romantic reminiscing of the PL days and a yearning to return once more.

I did occasionally enjoy being able to have a seat free beside me in the Holmesdale for the extra leg room however, must say.

I know romanticising things is inevitable when you look towards the past but really, where are the stories anymore? Where's the humanity in football? What makes the memories? Outrageous moments of skill, yes, like Townsend's goal at the Etihad but the real memories that last are made of experiences; the away days on the trains and coaches, the hostility you faced at Leeds or Leicester or Sunderland...the stuff you really remember...it's just gone. Not just things that you "see" but things that you really live through. The PL offers none of that. Jeez, some people FLY to away games now. As if. There used to be a burger/hot dog van (well, they claimed to be burgers and hot dogs) by the club shop when it was a portacabin, opposite the corner of the Old Stand/Whitehorse Lane End. And we ate that s***. Now, clubs discuss the quality of their catering like that's what's expected.

Sydenham by birth. Selhurst by the Grace of God.

Eze is an interesting one, isn't he? Richly talented as we all know, but from what I've heard said by those in the game and those with first-hand experience of him, extremely laid back and also quite a shy and retiring personality. Perhaps not one to grab things by the scruff of the neck and really push himself ahead in the way he needs to to succeed in a highly competitive environment. This season, he honestly has fallen far short of fulfilling the promise he showed last year and I think PV has a real task unlocking him and getting the best out of his obvious talents. Given what he has in his locker, he should be the sort of player you can build a team around but truthfully, he's not performing anywhere near that level at the moment.

Cant talk on his confidence etc, but my impression would be that he is shy, just incredibly laid back.

As much as I love him (just short of Lanzo levels) I think its time for a bit of bench time. He's too good to be giving us 1 or 2 good turns a game.

Though it all may change with 2 proper CM's so he can start getting the ball on the half turn.

Honestly Syd, I had this conversation with my cousin on Tuesday (Millwall fan) and he was expressing real contempt with that little club in the championship along similar lines so even that may be closer to old days but not far removed from us now. He lives in Newcastle now so does somewhat follow/support them as a secondary as he did Carlisle when he lived there (amusing anecdote available there but for another time).

Whilst I don't begrudge anybody accessibility let alone a right to watch football, the core culture/experience of it is very different these days I have to say. Part of me wants to celebrate the diversity and demographics we attract now but another part of me wants to question everyone as to where they were when we lost 1-3 to Coventry at home in 2002 (I think so anyway) and barely had about 15,000 in the stands?

Again, I can't help but feel it is very arrogant if not selfish to say so but it is a different world to me now and I'm relatively young! I try to enjoy it by focusing upon some... SOME of the benefits of the intense commercialism now however it's core value remains for me.

Whether we are beating a Premier and Champions League trophy contender on a sunny Saturday, stuffed full of absurdly overpriced food and accompanied by a crowd more at home in Disneyland or there's a few unfortunate blokes along with me away whilst we're drawing with Swindon (sh!thole BTW) on a freezing and soaking Tuesday night I'm still there for the same purpose, to support the Palace as they constitute a large part of my identity and it's too late for me to change now.

It's very rarely actual enjoyment, but it's religious for me these days! All does feel worth it however when the likes of Andros let one fly, or CYLee gets a last minute winner at Stoke (where I nearly knocked a small child onto the pitch from that upper tier when celebrating), we miraculously beat Chelsea after losing first 7 games, beat Arsenal 3-0 on my birthday or albeit an unsatisfactory final result, Puncheon scores a screaming volley as I watch perfectly angled behind the goal at Wembley or even when Olise bends an unlikely, absolute worldy of a free kick beyond De Gea. Too right you two. My Liverpool mate was talking about it too. You didn't need hundreds of quid and a visit to some club shop in the past. I never ate anything or drank anything at games other than what I smuggled in. When I was completely skint - I used to turn up and get in somehow. Every Saturday I went to a game wherever I was. I'm jaded with the money in football and was only pointing out recently that the best fan experience is actually a decent non-league game. It's honestly like the Premier League's lowest consideration is the fans. We pay to be treated like sh1t and go back for more. Palace shirts aren't the most expensive but look at Liverpool ticket prices and merchandise. What Scouser who hasn't just nicked something has 55 quid (even more) for a match? Shirts are 70 or maybe 60 for kid's ones. The kids will want one of course. I remember those guys selling them for a tenner in the pub. They were fine too - all the ones I got were exactly the same.
Pitch invasions for real reasons - having coins thrown at you by the clowns, getting beaten up by the police at Coventry and Walsall - those were the days. Now sanitised and paying people who do not anywhere near deserve it over 100k. I remember when there was no way we would pay Paul Stewart 25k. How times have changed. Queueing for FA Cup or play off tickets with a ticket stub for entitlement - how hilarious now.
