I would imagine pretty much every PL team of any standing will have their own Video performance guys to analyse upcoming opponents strengths & weaknesses to put together plans to break down the opposition defence, Mitchell is in that situation because he remains a work in progress, teams pile down his flank & overload him, he will need to learn to be better in those situations just as his team mates ( especially the more experienced ones) will have to learn to help him out / come to his rescue occasionally -

I believe that some would opine that he has not made any progress at all.
He is not some inexperienced youngster, he has 80 PL appearances to his name.

Indeed he has but thats 80 PL appearances in a Palace team, one that in itself seems to be struggling to find its identity & one that the midfield & its strengths of last season (to support the defence, win battles in the middle of the park & act as a springboard to attack) have this season been almost totally missing in action (with the exception of Decoure)

So with respect its easy to point to his number of starts but in the context of what's going on around him during game time pretty much every day is a school day for him & several others

I've said before: Mitchell has to play behind Zaha, a selfish individual whose loss of possession stats outdo any other Palace player. What is Mitchell supposed to do? Support the attack, make overlaps hoping that the pass will come? Sit back knowing that Zaha will inevitably lose the ball?
Unfortunately the hero worship of Zaha means that many do not see the downside to his game, which incidentally has become entirely predictable.
It's not particularly surprising that the opposition overload Mitchell's side, as he has defensive frailties and gets no support from Zaha. I think of PVA in that position, he used to wander upfield and go AWOL for periods of the game. Perhaps he too couldn't figure out what Zaha was up to next.

His defending has got steadily worse over the last season. Ball watches and loses attackers way too easily. Also gets sucked into the middle and leaves the far post unmarked.

I personally think he needs replacing, but maybe he just needs better coaching.

i wonder if he has been told to do this. Ward always does it on the other side and a year or so ago a commentator mentioned it was a deliberate ploy to form a back 3 when Mitchell went forward - i thought it was just typical Wardie ball watching.

Now Mitchell does it repeatedly.

If it is a deliberate tactic it is clearly not working!

Probably a move that PV picked up during his playing days that works well if your at a top 6 club with world class players at your disposal slotting into every position, not so great at Palace -

Steve (as that's obviously who you are) we are all grateful for saving the club and for what you've achieved in the last ten years but it's time for you to retire and for someone with deeper pockets to take over as we are currently only heading one way and that's back to The Championship

for how many years have you been saying that we are heading back to the Championship, and how many times has it happened?

I totally understand your mindset in terms of 'Context', however Mitchell has been playing in a team that has finished in 14th and 12th place in the PL so not in a team that has been consistently abject and been cut adrift in the league.

I am not totally dismissive of Mitchell and I hope he develops into a player of some aplomb, however, I do not believe he has made the progress that perhaps many had expected.Perhaps he will in the months ahead.
It is no surprise that he is targeted by our opponents.

If that poster the other day is correct and has “contacts” in club , Mitchell apparently is only there for the money and doing the bare minimum in training etc , however we have no other option in that position at present . But seems to make sense as his form has dropped dramatically

“This is a crisis, a large crisis.... in fact if you have a moment, it’s a 12 storey crisis, magnificent entrance hall, carpeting throughout, 24 hour portage , and an enormous sign on the roof saying “This , is a large crisis” - Edmund Blackadder

If this is in fact the case, I cannot understand why Adaramola or Hannam hasn’t been given an opportunity. Both are pretty decent in their own way and to be honest they can’t be much worse defensively surely.

I know Scott Guyett left a few months ago, I dont know who replaced him, but have there been other performance & monitoring coaches that have changed recently & if so does that provide any indication into the apparent drop in energy levels / work rate / distance readings that we are seeing recently.

None prior to this one as far as I can recall. I think that you are confusing me with quite a few others

Perhaps the poster is confusing you with 'Yours Truly' !

I have been a serial 'Elijah of Doom', predicting relegation season on season but I was a tad more optimistic about our prospects this campaign.
I blame the gout medication !
