I am glad to hear the idea of groups of 3 has been abandoned. If you only have two matches to play there is no room for error and it would lead to teams taking a very cautious approach to matches resulting in dull games. I think the 1982 World Cup in Spain involved a second round of group matches with three teams in each group. England drew both of their matches 0-0 and went out. I think that says it all.
