I don't know if I'd go so far as to say "really good", but it certainly had its moments. But that's only on the basis of doing half the job.

As I see, there are two parts (or halves) to recruitment:

1. Player replacement
2. Player signings

In terms of 2, we've done pretty well. Eze, Olise, Guehi, Andersen, Schlupp, and Hughes, have all looked to some degree or another like decent signings, some very good indeed. Edouard and Mateta have been disasters, but they're very much the minority. More signing have been good than bad. Unfortunately, both of our terrible signings have come in the same position, so that's had a greater impact than it should.

In terms of point 1, though, our recruitment has been awful. We have simply not replaced key players, and as a result, the squad suffers from having a number that are way, way past their sell-by dates. Ward should have been put out to pasture two years ago, Clyne at least a year ago, Luka two years ago, Tomkins two years ago, McArthur probably two years ago, and Conor was never replaced at all. That's left six yawning chasms in what's a small squad to begin with. Most of the above can barely even contribute for ten minutes off the bench, let alone provide competition within the squad. Heaven knows I love Joel Ward, but he was just embarassing today. And to add insult to injury, we've repeatedly recruited sick notes. Nathan Ferguson? Seriously? He was broken before we bought him. How was that ever going to end well? Chris Richards...great player, but perpetually injured everywhere he's been. What was the point? Someone to keep Ferguson company on the physio's table?

The reality is that the success of a handful of our signings has obscured the fact that our overall recruiting strategy has been appalling and now we're paying the price for it with an unbalanced, weak squad that has no depth and provides the manager with no alternatives when the going gets tough. In short, we're a mess.

Nicely written.

We had well defined shortcomings in January, so we spend 10 million quid on someone who cannot step into the starting line up and gets cameo substitutions ... Can someone explain to me this amazingly insightful recruiting strategy? Freedman should have been fired before Patrick

I want to write something positive .... but watching the Arsenal debacle today made it clear that it will take a herculean effort to stay up, because we have so many weak spots that the teams below us will exploit. Our team identity needs a reboot.

Two weeks to reignite passion, grit, determination and team spirit.... then we can cover off the weaknesses and perhaps exploit some explosive counterattacking football.

Better get someone in charge real fast!

I hear we're really going for it ... rumours abound on bringing Roy back to look after us for our last few weeks in the PL. We're also planning for the future by offering Zaha £200k a week!!!! This is the same guy who has done $od all for us since Christmas and appears totally disinterested on his current measly £130k a week. Money speaks but the football certainly doesn’t.

Essentially what I wrote on another thread Syd, really sad to see.

The thing that annoys me the most is that teams like Brighton and Brentford seem to be able to identify players from lower leagues that are available for a couple of million or so and who slot seamlessly into the team whereas we buy players like Ahamada for £10m and Richards, then decide they are not ready for the first team.

This also reflects on our overall profitability as we are not generating sufficient revenue from improving players and selling them on (AWB being the notable exception.)

I would say the best signing we could possibly make is to splash the cash on Brighton’s recruitment team and sack Dougie, but alas he appears untouchable.

It’s easy to say, they should have got rid of different players, but if they are under contract and nobody wants to buy them, you have a problem. It was widely stated that we would enter a transitional period of moving to younger players with resale value, you can’t do this in a couple of transfer windows it takes time.
Every club has fans that complain about recruitment, nothing is ever good enough, it’s the nature of expectation.
The main problem this season is the players aren’t fit enough or motivated enough, that is squarely the responsibility of the manager and coaching staff. How many games have we faded in the second half and given away goals?

There's still quite a few games remaining but the most important thing at the time was the gap between us and trouble which was considerable, it is quite obvious that our club took a gamble with the squad it had and who could predict what was going to happen at the time.

I agree this is a management failure but I also think many of our players are too old and incapable of being fit enough or fast enough to play modern PL football. Players like Ward, Tomkins and Milivojevic legs have gone and they look like they are wading through treacle.

The game has changed as well though and you can no longer walk around the centre circle and dictate play with a few neat skills. It’s all about high speed pressing and counter attacking now. At least half our team look incapable and uninterested in doing either. Our press is a half hearted attempt to close down and easily bypassed. It lasts 15 minutes and then it’s almost like there is a collective, ‘nah, that’s too tiring’ and we drop back to the halfway line.

Really good might have been overstatement, I guess my issue is that because of previous fallings, we've left ourselves too much to do.

Instead of adding 2/3 players a window, we've been left in a position where we pretty much need to do the whole squad in 1 go.

I'm not too bothered about players like Ferguson. Stuff isn't going to work out all the time and we'll get unlucky with some. Wouldn't be an issue if the rest of the recruitment was ok. But when we have 2 terrible RB's - everyone is looking to the signing of a kid with 20 games under his belt as the answer to all the problems. When in reality, he should have been 1 of 2 RB's signed an in the bracket as one for the future.

It would be nice if we pulled in a couple of players from the U21/reserve squad. Surely we have a right back who is half decent and would be an improvement on Wardy who is clearly now ‘done’. Same goes for Clyne. If we don’t have a young right back who is now better than him what on earth is the point of the academy and U21 squad?

The bar is ridiculously low to oust many first team players and it’s extremely worrying no one is bursting through and grabbing their chance. Maybe they’re just not there which would be incredibly sad so let’s hope it’s more a case that they’re not being given a chance which a new manager (with a better eye) can rectify.

Milivojevic, Schlupp, J Ayew, Tomkins and Ward all should have gone by now and replaced with upgrades.

Money should have been spent on a half decent forward, its gonna take a long time to sort this mess out.
