I do agree it's the only way at this time. But it's not a free hit. Southampton were the Brighton/Brentford of yesterday but they seem to have run out of road. I suspect lots of clubs would like their success in the transfer market but it's easier said than done, especially over a sustained period. Brighton will see their best recruiters poached and, with it, their market intelligence stolen.

That's a when not an if.

If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities.

Yup agree with most of this.

Much is made about the Man United class of 92 but who came afterwards?

I can't remember any player post that era that walked into the United first team until you come to Rashford. Yes they had squad players and some regulars but none of the quality of Beckham and co.

It's hard to bring youth into the first team or scout out bargain players and Southampton have hit a dry spell in much the same way as United did.

Exactly the United 92 and Southampton golden generation are very much the exception. By and large most clubs in the league bring a player through every other year.

Any more expectation of our academy is unrealistic. What we should be aiming for is that the quality of that 1 that makes it is better. And we can sell a few off to championship teams

Southampton fell out with their chief scout -can't remember the name now - about the time Hassenhuttl started. The rest as you see is history. He wasn't poached. For now mid-table clubs are less likely to lose scouts than players becuase it suits the giants to let 'minows' find, develop and prove new blood who they then buy for swagger money - if they turn out that good. Let's hope so eh? I've also seen it suggested we need one big money sale this summer for FFP compliance? If that's the case, there's been more defensive frailty at the top than goalshyness so Guehi seems likley. I see fewer veterans departing than many; reserves of proven quality are necessary and if they're still play well when called on......We need a striker, we'd need to replace Guehi if he went and one left back is not enough. I wish I thought anyone else would buy Edouard - a bogof with Butland?

I suspect if a player is going to make a jump up to the first team it will be made obvious by our actions in the market.

There will be holes in the squad to fill this summer, our activity, and pre-season will surely be a clue as to whether the club has a view on any of our youngsters.

On Badgers point on United, they were such a class side (pained to say) it made it almost impossible for another youth team player to make the jump. They did have a few youth team players make the fringes then move on to other Premier League teams (Bardsley, Savage) but you had to be international level to get a sniff. So it was really the cups, and the end of the season where the players that didn’t quite make it got their chances.

It’s different when you’re not at the top of the league, Southampton grew a side coming back up from League 1.

For us when Van Aarnholt’s contract was up we didn’t move in January, despite us all expecting to see someone come in because the club knew Mitchell was likely to make the jump but needed time, and a space to fill. Makes me wonder whether we are have held off buying another right-back, which we have expected since Summer 21? When AWB left. I think it is so hard to come into Prem football and play in the spine without any football. Not many can make that leap, so even if we do produce a couple of gems they will be out wide.

Luka might have already been replaced by Ahamada, but where does that leave Ozoh? Loan next year maybe? Or can he step into JimmyMac’s shoes. Doubtful.

I think we have 3 good keepers at club, so Butland going out won’t be a loss. I’m sure he’s on a decent wage.

Right back is a position that we need cover in. Could Rodney be the answer here? I suspect he needs another year he’s 18 and playing with the 21’s so Wardy might be the answer to carry on filling the gap until he’s ready to make the jump.

I’m sure someone is much better placed to comment on the youth team and who is likely to be good enough. Jes and Killian have obviously done well in League 1 but neither were competing right at the top of league, and will likely need another step up to show whether they deserve a chance.

We are 70mil in the red, so expect Zaha or no Zaha we are going to have to reduce the wage bill so that isn’t continually increasing. This window will be interesting.

Although it's tempting to think of Richards as a suitable replacement for Guehi (or Andersen), the problem is that Richards is always injured. Guehi has been pretty much an iron man for us.

I hope for as little disruption as possible, so if Wilf leaves, then I would absolutely want to hold on to both Eze and Olise, and hopefully Guehi also. I'd only let Guehi go if we get a crazy offer, and we have an excellent CB target in mind to replace him, because I don't trust Richards' fitness for a minute.

It's time for Luka, Macca, Tomkins, and Riedewald to go. The one player I really want gone is Edouard. I will be p-ssed off if I see him again next season. I'm ok with keeping Mateta one more season, as a bench player. Hughes is a good bench player, same with Ward. Ahamada looked ok in limited action. Maybe JRS becomes a squad player?

Spot on, agree with everything.

I'd want us to be seriously looking at Levi Cowill. He's the next big Chelsea CB, which we know have good pedigree. He's been used sparingly at Brighton this season, but performed well when called upon. But if Guehi were to go, he'd be a ready made replacement. IMO he's going to end up with 40+ England caps.

And on that note, its where I'd go fishing if I was DF. They have hovered up most of the good young talent in the land, and they are going to need to shift some bodies this summer.

Regarding the rest of the squad, its difficult to get rid of the guys who are underperforming but on good contracts. So we'll see Edouard, Riedewald etc next season.

We've trusted in youth over the last couple of seasons with most of our prominent performers under 24 (Anderson being a little older). So I'd want to see the out of contracts replaced with some more talented kids.

Future looks very bright. Just imagine, if we can get a RB, CM, and CF that are half decent!

It might not be the type of chat that many are comfortable with. Or used to, as we've never really had many players that other clubs wanted.

But for us to progress we need to have a squad full of players that bugger clubs want. We either hold and enjoy their talents, or sell and reinvest in the next one.

I obviously don't want to see any go, but selling 1 good player a season will give us the funds to reinvest in the team.

If we can sell 1 for 70m and bring in a couple of others it works for me.

Presumably you mean ARSEnal and obviously Brighton.
