Sorry Mattwebb, but your response means very little to me. I believe that we were created by 'some higher being' however i dont believe in Christianity and its beliefs. Your answer leaves me quite baffled, as i have very little knowledge about Christianity. Tell me do you agree that somebody who treats others with constant care, dedicates their lives to helping others (perhaps a heart doctor), and respects the rules and all other people around them should go to hell because they don't believe in Christianity. It appears that you are a Christian who believes strongly in God, Christ etc, however i'd much prefer it if you answered this with a yes or no and a couple of lines of reasoning. Cheers...

Out of interest, what happened to all the sinners that died before Christ? Are they all huddled together down in hell wishing they'd been born a few hundred years' later?

What you mean like Moses and people before Christ? Well they only had the Old Testament like Jews do now.

They still believed in Christ, although they did not know His name was Jesus.

Read Isaiah and you will see that people before Jesus knew that He was coming, if they put their trust in this truth they are most certainly not in hell.

Isaiah was written hundreds of years before Christ came, but they knew he'd die on a cross, and be born in Bethlehem, the Bible tells us that Jesus's death and subsequent resurrection were outside of time.

It doesn't matter when you were born.

IMPalace - I agree!!

It is individual people and their up-bringing, not religions that will change how we all feel about each other.

My youngest son's Godfather is a Muslim (and the ceremony took place in a catholic church - in a muslim country, Dubai!).

In the current world, we need to get away from stereotypes, it is individuals who decide how religion should be spouted - not the church (or mosque, or temple).

Matt, as far as the Muslims are concerned Moses was one of their prophets!

IMpalace I think I answered your question. The answer is yes, but I explained the reason behind this.

You are right Singapore Eagle, the Koran has a lot of similar stories in it to the Bible. This is because those stories actually happened.

The Bible was in existence before the Koran, the Koran was from MOhammed, who claimed he was told all of this by an angelic being.

One thing to consider however is that Lucifer is an angelic being.

But, is the Koran any different from the newer updated versions of the Bible?

It all depends on perspective!!!

And, what your parents believe!!!

I don't read the newer updated versions of the Bible.

I read the closest translation to the original text of Greek and Hebrew, and have even delved into the original texts themselves, learning some Greek and Hebrew along the way.

The number of people who are brainwashed into believing what their parents do is staggering. As somebody posted before, children should be allowed to make their own decisions on their religious stance.

Matt - I am not having a go at you (I have just sent you a PM to stress that fact) but, it is all down to interpretation - otherise, how do you explain the Protestant vs. Catholic problem - both sets of Christians??????

Religion was invented when people had no idea how the world came into being, so they came up with a story which explained it - all cultures have their own creation myths. Religion was then used as a tool of control and oppression, mainly for rulers to preserve their power.

Now, however, we have science which can explain many things about our universe. Not all questions can yet be answered by science, but we have a much better understanding of how the universe came into being and how life evolved on Earth.

Some people still cling to their faith because it is deep-rooted in our culture and generations have been brainwashed into blind adherence.

Fortunately, many people now realise that religion is nothing but myth and is meaningless to their lives. I and millions of others try to do the right thing because it is right, not because we have been told to by a priest or a book, nor because we hope it will get us into heaven when we die.

Suicide bombers believe they will go to a special martyr's heaven when they die, where they get priviledges denied to other "righteous" folk. Another example of religion promising paradise in the afterlife in exchange for unquestioning obedience in this (our only) life.
